Culture - Day 2 grades K-3 learning activities
These activities will help youth build awareness and learn to identify city resources. They can be done alone, but work best with friends over a video chat such as Skype, Zoom, Facetime, etc.
Trivia question: In what year did Calgary become a city?
A) 2000 B) 1899 C) 1950 D) 1894
- Take a deep breath in and squeeze your fists as tight as you can.
- Hold it for 5 seconds.
- Blow all the air out through your mouth and shake your hands and arms as fast as you can.
- Pencil Crayons
- Give your child a piece of paper and pencil
- Have your child divide the sheet into four sections (they can fold the paper or draw lines).
- Help them write 4 of their favourite places in Calgary (one in each section).
- Have them draw each place.
- Share the drawings with family members and see if anyone else has the same favourite places.
Using household items, have your child build their very own skyscraper at home! See how tall they can make it and imagine what it would look like in downtown Calgary.
If they want to and have enough supplies, build more skyscrapers to make their own downtown.

For this activity, have your child draw a map of their dream city.
They can draw buildings, stores and houses like they see in Calgary. They can also make up amazing new attractions, like a chocolate fountain or a sledding race course.
Have them name their new city. How many people live there? What do people do for fun? Are there any special events or festivals?
Ask your child:
- What's your favourite thing about Calgary?
- What makes Calgary special?
- How can you make Calgary an even better place?
