Where development begins

Every great city is built on a vision and that vision includes your voice. In Calgary, we use two types of plans to guide how our city grows: Area Structure Plans (ASPs) for new communities, and Local Area Plans (LAPs) for established ones. Together, they shape where people live, work, and connect and your input helps us make the right choices for today and tomorrow.

  • Where new communities start

    Area Structure Plans (ASPs)

    An Area Structure Plan (ASP) is a long-term plan that guides undeveloped land into complete communities. It sets land use concepts and policies for growth, shaping development over 20–30 years.

  • How your neighbourhood grows

    Local Area Plans (LAPs)

    A Local Area Plan (LAP) guides how established communities evolve. It provides direction for development, amenities, and improvements to help neighbourhoods grow and adapt over time.

Your voice in the Plan

Plans aren’t made in isolation,  they’re shaped with input from residents, businesses, and community groups. When you share your ideas, you influence how Calgary evolves. Participation makes sure every plan reflects the people who live there.
