Prince's Island Park Lagoon skating

Embrace the holiday vibes and spirit at Prince’s Island Park Lagoon, Calgary's go-to downtown skating destination.

Located at Fourth St. and First Ave. S.W., this magical spot shines with festive lights, inviting fire pits, and plenty of seating so you can warm up between laps. 

Exciting news! Calgary Skate Rentals is opening Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025 through March 28, 2026 at Prince’s Island Park Lagoon (weather dependent). Get ready for convenient skate rentals, Free Skate Saturdays, and free beginner skating lessons.

General skating FAQs

What time is Prince’s Island Park lagoon open for general skating?

Prince’s Island Park lagoon is open for skating daily from 10 a.m. - 11 p.m. 

When will Calgary Skate Rentals open?

Calgary Skate Rentals is scheduled to open on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2025 until March 28, 2026 (weather dependent). The regular hours of operation are as follows: 

  • Thursdays & Fridays: 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. 
  • Saturdays: 2 p.m. – 9 p.m. 
  • Sundays: 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. 

Holiday hours are enhanced and will be in effect from Dec. 24, 2025 – Jan. 4, 2026. Please visit calgaryskaterentals.com for the most up-to-date information.

Please note that Calgary Skate Rentals will be closed when temperatures/wind chill is -25C or below.

Where should I check for information regarding the rink status?

Before you lace up, remember to check the rink status, Calgary’s weather loves to keep us guessing! Stay in the know and make sure the ice is ready for your perfect outdoor skate by visiting Outdoor skating rinks.  

Please note that Calgary Skate Rentals will be closed when temperatures/wind chill is -25C or below.

Is there skate sharpening available?

Yes, skate sharpening is available at a cost of $10 plus GST.  

Where’s the best place to park to access Prince’s Island Park lagoon?

Park in one of these downtown parking lots to easily access Prince’s Island Park lagoon: 

  • Lot 888 (Chinatown) - 109 Riverfront Ave. S.E. (Accessible parking)  
    • $4 max rate after 6 p.m.  

What should I bring when going skating?

Bundle up and make the most of your skating adventure! To stay warm and comfortable, here’s a quick checklist of what to bring: 

  • Skates and a helmet (if you have them) 
  • Cozy, warm socks 
  • Mittens  
  • Snow pants 
  • A winter jacket 
  • A scarf for extra warmth 

What type of amenities will be at Prince’s Island Park lagoon?

This magical spot sparkles with twinkling lights, cozy firepits and plenty of seating for warming up between laps. City of Calgary Parks staff keep the firepits glowing during these times: 

  • Happening now: Fridays – Sundays, 2 p.m. – 7 p.m. 
  • Starting Dec. 15: Mondays – Thursdays, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. 

Where are the nearby washrooms?

Public washrooms are available near the River Cafe, a short five-minute walk from Prince’s Island lagoon located at 25 Prince's Island Park S.W. The washrooms are open from 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily. 

Please note that lessons will be cancelled when temperatures are -20 °C or below. Please call 311 to confirm before going.

Free Skate Saturdays FAQs

When do Free Skate Saturdays start?

The City is thrilled to offer Free Skate Saturdays starting Saturday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. for the first 50 skaters (weather dependent)!

How can I get free skate rentals on Saturdays?

Join us every Saturday starting Dec. 20, 2025 through March 28, 2026, and enjoy FREE skates, helmets, and skate aids, while supplies last.

Please note: Free Skate Saturdays will only run if ice conditions are safe, and inclement weather may affect rental operations. For full details, visit calgaryskaterentals.com.

Free beginner skating lessons FAQs

When are the free beginner skating lessons?

Mark your calendar! From Jan. 3, 2026 through March 28, 2026, The City is proud to offer FREE beginner skating lessons every Saturday from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Prince’s Island Park lagoon.

Each hour kicks off with a 30-minute guided lesson from our City of Calgary instructors, followed by on-ice support to help you build confidence and keep the fun going. 

Please note that the skating lesson will be cancelled when temperatures are -20C or below. Please call 311 to confirm if the lessons are running

Who can participate in the free skating lessons and what should I bring?

Beginner skaters of all ages are welcome to attend!

Calgary Skate Rentals has plenty of skates in different sizes, as well as helmets and skate aids for about 40 people. Availability for the helmets and skate aids is first-come, first-served.

If rentals run out, you may need to wait until a pair becomes available. To make the most of your time on the ice, be sure to bring: 

  • Skates and a helmet (if you have your own) 
  • Warm, cozy socks 
  • Mittens  
  • Snow pants 
  • A winter jacket 
  • A scarf for extra warmth

Throughout the summer, The City hosted free recreation classes for adults and teenagers (13+).

Impact: Over 100 participants attended the free workouts, providing a great opportunity to try new activities, meet people and enjoy downtown in a new way!

Surge 3-on-3 Basketball

Surge 3-on-3 Basketball

Surge 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament

Downtown Strategy, in partnership with the Calgary Surge, hosted a 3-on-3 basketball tournament on Sept. 14 at Eau Claire Plaza. The Sport Court is available at Eau Claire Plaza for free recreation opportunities until Oct. 12.

Impact: The community celebration was sold out with 24 teams participating in the event. The strategic programming connected people, created positive outlets, and fostered a safer, more vibrant downtown community.

Surge City Hoops Summer Series

This summer, our Downtown Strategy teamed up with the Calgary Surge to bring free youth basketball clinics to Century Gardens. The response was incredible with every session being sold out.  

Impact: By the end of the season, over 1000 young athletes participated in the free basketball clinics; sharpening their skills and providing free access to organized recreation in the core.

River Hall summer programming

The popular So Long Summer Series at River Hall, returned for its second year at Lot 6. From Aug. 29 to Sept. 28, Calgarians enjoyed free, family-friendly programming that brought the heart of the city alive with local flavours, live entertainment and inclusive vibes. This year, visitors we’re able to take advantage of the Washroom Attendant Program and Playbin Activation.

Impact: A record-breaking 10,000 people enjoyed the downtown amenity, bringing vibrancy and positive energy to the area.
