MacEwan Slope Stability Project
Project update – July 2025
The City of Calgary has hired a contractor, and work to stabilize the upper part of the MacEwan slope will begin in July 2025.
We will make the slope safe by installing a row screw piles, along the top of the slope next to the ATCO gas line. After that, we will rebuild the road base and repave the eastbound lane.
To complete this work safely, the eastbound vehicle lane will be closed so repairs can happen and construction equipment can fit. The pathway will stay open because the work will happen more than 5 metres away from it. Parking will not be allowed on the eastbound lane of MacEwan Park View N.W. during work. This will help keep extra weight off the slope where cracks have appeared.

The work is expected to take about 12 months to finish. We will confirm the exact timeline soon.

Project background
This project covers the area from 38 to 62 MacEwan Park View N.W. in northwest Calgary, next to residential homes and green spaces. Cracks have developed in the eastbound lane of the roadway due to slope movement in the nearby greenspace. While nearby homes are not affected, the slope movement poses a risk to public safety and important infrastructure, including a TELUS manhole and an ATCO gas line.
The City has monitored this slope since 1999. In 2023, the cracks widened, showing that the slope’s movement was increasing. A risk assessment found the slope stability to be poor, meeting the City’s criteria for remediation of slope. In November 2024, City Council approved $2 million in funding to address the issue and protect the community.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there any risk to nearby homes?
No. There is no current impact on nearby homes. We will continue to monitor the slope throughout the work.

Yes. The pathway will stay open, as the work will take place at least 5 meters away.
Will parking be affected?
Yes. Parking on the eastbound lane of MacEwan Park View N.W. will not be allowed until work is finished, to avoid adding weight to the slope.
