Nose Creek Park Strategy

Project overview

The goal of the Nose Creek Park Strategy (NCPS) is to understand:

The NCPS is intended to support the goals of the Notice of Motion - Nose Creek Park Strategy (NoM) that was initiated and presented by Councillor Jasmine Mian in Fall 2024.

The NCPS will analyze a study area north of Beddington Trail N.E., to the northern city limits along Highway 566, and open lands west of the CPKC rail lines to Deerfoot Trail N.E. This area includes:

  • Important environmental areas
  • Sites of cultural significance
  • A vital watershed
  • Shared infrastructure

It will also respond to future growth in Calgary’s north-central region, the need for mixed mobility and open space planning, regional environmental projects and the opportunity to support the Calgary’s Pathway and Bikeway Network (5A) Program.

We recognize the importance of Nose Creek Valley and at the end of the study the NCPS will include recommendations to:

  • Enhance the environmental network
  • Celebrate cultural significance
  • Improve water quality and infrastructure
  • Enhance mobility
  • Strengthen regional collaboration and connectivity
  • Advance cultural reconciliation

Collaborations

To help the development of the NCPS, we are working with key interest groups who have assets, projects or a special interest in the Nose Creek Valley. These groups are an important part of understanding:

  • What projects are planned or underway in the area.
  • What limits have been detected.
  • Identifying project alignments and collaborations.

We hope to recommend project integrations and connections to other areas of the Nose Creek Valley in the final report. We are currently working with Area Structure Plan (ASP) projects in the study area which include:

Notice of motion

On October 29, 2024, the Notice of Motion – Nose Creek Park Strategy (NoM) was unanimously approved by Calgary City Council. The NoM directs Administration to assess the feasibility of establishing a new regional park in northeast Calgary, within the Nose Creek Valley and other enhancement of the Nose Creek Valley. It highlights the ecological, cultural, and recreational significance of the area, while noting the increasing urban development in north-central Calgary.

The NoM will help determine the next steps for the Nose Creek Valley and guide the NCPS using six key themes:

  • Enhance the ecological network
  • Celebrate cultural significance
  • Improve water quality and infrastructure
  • Enhance mobility
  • Strengthen regional collaboration and connectivity
  • Advance cultural reconciliation

The Nose Creek Park Strategy project team will provide a final report and recommendations to Calgary City Council by the end of 2026. The report will also be shared with the public.

Project timeline

The NCPS will take place between July 2025 and December 2026. It will be developed through research and review of projects, plans, and policies in or near the study area. This collaboration will support the strategy development and recommendations. The final strategy will be presented to City Council by the end of 2026.
