32 Avenue N.E. and 36 Street N.E. road improvements
Project update – July 2026
This summer, the City and our contractor, Aecon, are resurfacing two of the busiest roads in northeast Calgary: 36 Street N.E. and 32 Avenue N.E.
32 Avenue N.E.
We are repaving all lanes between Barlow Trail N.E. and 36 Street N.E., as well as completing concrete repairs to curbs and gutters, driveways and sidewalks along the busy roadway.
The work is on schedule to be completed and operational by the end of September.
36 Street N.E.
This project includes repaving all lanes from 16 Avenue N.E. to 39 Avenue N.E. as well as building a new multiuse pathway connection along the west side of the 36 Street N.E. between 20 Avenue and 37 Avenue N.E.
We are completing 36 Street N.E. in four stages, with daytime concrete work and nighttime asphalt milling and paving. The project will also include expanding transit pads, LRT infrastructure improvements, and construction of a multi-use pathway.
The work is on schedule to be completed and operational by the end of October 2026.
Access to the Peter Lougheed Centre will remain open at all times, and transit users will be able to access the Rundle and Whitehorn C-Train stations throughout construction,

Traffic and community impacts
We know construction can be inconvenient. We are doing our best to reduce the impact on your community.
Lane closures: At least one lane will stay open during roadway construction. Watch for road signs.
Work hours:
- Pathway and concrete work: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends
- Paving: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on weekdays, 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekends
Noise and vibrations: You may hear or feel construction, but we’ll try to keep it minimal.
About the project
As part of a continuing program of major road restoration, The City is planning to complete pavement rehabilitation along 36 Street N.E. Multiple sections of the busy roadway show have reached the end of their lifecyle and have affected pavement performance.
This project will improve roadway operation and surface characteristics to help to ensure the road continues to be safe, functional and in great condition for years to come. These upgrades will bring the road up to modern standards, improve traffic flow, enhance safety and pavement performance while improving connections for pedestrians and cyclists.
Budget
The construction budget for this project is $6 million.
