5 Ave S.E. Flyover to Memorial Drive N.E. Merge Lane Extension

Project update - June 2026

Work is scheduled to begin in early June 2026 and is expected to continue until late August 2026. Work will pause during Stampede (July 3–12).

About the project

The City of Calgary is extending the merge lane at 5 Avenue S.E. to Memorial Drive by approximately 400 metres to the east. Once complete, drivers will have an improved and more efficient connection to Memorial Drive, supporting better traffic flow through the area.

This work is being delivered through The City's Various Street Improvements program.

What to expect during construction

We understand that construction can be disruptive. We’ll do our best to minimize its impact.

  • A 24-hour lane closure will be in place for the duration of the work. Crews will begin with the outer right lane, followed by the inner left lane.
  • Two eastbound lanes will remain open at all times.
  • Speed reductions to 50 km/h will be in effect.
  • Short-term additional closures or traffic impacts may be required and will be communicated in advance.
  • Work will pause during Stampede, from July 3 to 12.
  • A Bow River Pathway closure will be required for the duration of the project; however, river pathway connectivity will be maintained.
  • Drivers should expect delays, construction equipment and crews on site, and increased noise in the area.
