McKenzie Towne - Roundabout safety improvements
The City of Calgary is planning safety improvements for the McKenzie Towne roundabout.
The proposed update would change the roundabout from a conventional two-lane layout to a spiral roundabout design. The goal is to make movements through the roundabout easier to understand and more predictable for people who drive, walk and travel through the area every day.
The proposed design is still under review and may change as planning continues. There are no changes to how people use the roundabout today.
Why this work is being planned
The McKenzie Towne roundabout is an important community connection used by residents, students, businesses, transit services and visitors travelling through southeast Calgary.
As travel patterns change over time, The City periodically reviews infrastructure to identify opportunities to improve safety, usability and long-term performance. This review focuses on how vehicles move through the roundabout, particularly near exits and how clearly those movements are understood by drivers and pedestrians.
This project reflects The City’s commitment to planning ahead, maintaining important transportation infrastructure and making it easier for people to move safely and confidently through Calgary as communities continue to grow.
Project timeline
This work is being planned alongside the 2026–2027 pavement rehabilitation program.
Coordinating these projects allows The City to:
- Reduce repeated construction in the same location
- Minimize disruption for residents and businesses
- Deliver improvements more efficiently

What is being proposed
The proposed design would convert the roundabout to a spiral layout.
A spiral roundabout is designed to guide drivers into the correct lane before entering and help them follow that lane to their intended exit. The proposed design is intended to reduce confusion and support more predictable vehicle movements.
The proposed design includes clearer lane guidance, pavement markings and divider lines that guide drivers through the roundabout, more predictable vehicle movements at exits, and a mountable centre area that allows larger vehicles, buses and emergency responders to navigate the intersection safely when needed.
The proposed design continues to accommodate larger vehicles and emergency responders.
