Supporting Calgarians in need with the COVID-19 Community Response Fund

As Calgarians, it is in our blood to always be on the lookout for ways to help our families, friends and neighbours - and during the COVID-19 pandemic is no exception.

Many of us are already assisting vulnerable individuals in our communities or working from home to help flatten the curve. But many are still looking for other ways to assist those in need.

The City of Calgary and United Way of Calgary and Area (UWCA) have established a local COVID-19 Community Response Fund to support community social service agencies who are working diligently to keep Calgarians safe and well during the COVID-19 pandemic. The fund will allow for a collaborative, city-wide fundraising effort, which will make it easier for Calgarians to contribute to one, centralized fund and ensure an effective, coordinated response to support the local community. This money will be raised by Calgarians and stay in Calgary. The Province recently announced they will match donations up to $2 million.

The resources raised through this fund will ensure agencies on the ground can continue their critical work in this time of need. The fund will support people most heavily impacted by COVID-19, including elderly, indigenous populations, mental health and addictions, persons with disabilities, homeless, and others that may be identified by this public health crisis. Tax receipts for donations will be available.

"Calgary is a caring community and time and time again, we've shown that together, we are stronger. Through crisis, we take a stand to make sure no one is left behind and everyone is taken care of. We rally together for the safety of our families, loved ones, and neighbours", says Alexandra Burdeyney, City of Calgary United Way Campaign Coordinator. "This fund will help us come together as a community to efficiently and strategically support those in need."
