Transportation Network Companies (TNC)

A company providing transportation services (via an app) to a customer, who pays a fare or fee for the service (picked up within Calgary), must be licensed with The City. The TNC affiliates with drivers, who operate their personal vehicle, and hold a valid Transportation Network Driver’s Licence issued by The City of Calgary. Download the Vehicle for Hire Bylaw 20M2021 for all licensing requirements and applicable fees.

A TNC must not advertise, offer, or conduct operations without a valid City of Calgary TNC licence.

The primary difference between a TNC and a taxi is all trips provided by a TNC must be booked through the TNC’s app. Phone calls, texting, web bookings and street hailing are not allowed. The trip payment is also collected through the TNC’s app; cash payments or electronic payments separate from the TNC’s app are not allowed.

Applications

An application is required and upon approval a licence is issued that is required to be renewed each year.

Please visit the Vehicle for Hire online portal to apply online. Please see our how-to guides if you need assistance with the online application process.

If you require further information, please contact Vehicle for Hire.

Renewals

A TNC Licence can be renewed from the first of the month prior to the expiry month up to the date of expiry. For example, if the expiry date is May 31, the first day of renewal is April 1 and the last day is May 31.

If a TNC Licence is not renewed by the expiry date, the licence file is closed, and the TNC must cease all transportation network operations in the city of Calgary.
