The Mobility Operations Centre (MOC) operates a computerized traffic signal management system that allows traffic engineers to monitor and control the operation of The City's traffic signal network.

In 2020, the MOC replaced its 22-year-old Central Traffic Control System with an advanced system called TransSuite. Roughly 60% of the City’s signalized intersections have been migrated into the new system with the rest expected to be done by the end of 2021.

The new system has better alert and reporting systems and sends per second information from connected intersections, compared to per minute from the previous system.

There are 1,100 traffic signals in Calgary which are connected to the MOC. This includes all of the downtown area and the major traffic carriers such as Macleod Trail, Crowchild Trail, 16 Avenue North and Blackfoot Trail.

TransSuite monitors the traffic signals for proper operation and collects data on traffic flow, such as volumes and speeds from vehicle sensors at the intersections. The signal system also interacts with the LRT system, some of the bus routes and some of the fire routes by providing priority for these vehicles.

The system can override the normal operation of traffic signals when necessary. Special events like hockey games or concerts at the Saddledome or major road construction may require a short-term adjustment to the signal timing.

Traffic signal coordination and synchronization

In Calgary, there are 70 coordinated corridors which comprise of 540 signalized intersections.

Many factors can impact the operation of traffic signal coordination. The main one is a possible disruption of signal communication to the Central Traffic Control System. If communication to central system is lost, the MOC is unable to coordinate the signals. For this reason, the MOC works very closely with the staff in the field to ensure communication is maintained at all times.
