What we do

You may have seen our damage prevention coordinators out and about in your community. They typically work out of their vehicles and are responsible for the following activities:

  • Locating underground utilities (water feeder mains, forced sewer mains storm water siphons etc.) using maps, books, blueprints, computer mapping programs and tracing machines. 
  • Calling City surveyors to further assist, when needed with locating underground utilities. 
  • Investigating causes and determining responsibilities of ground disturbances when Water Services utilities have been hit.
  • Delivering notices to customers regarding pending activities and notification of temporary parking bans

You may be building a new fence or deck, landscaping or planting a garden, and each time you do, it’s important to check for underground utilities that may be buried just centimeters below the surface. 

Protect the health and safety of yourself and others

Checking for underground buried utilities is crucial for several reasons:

  • Safety

    Underground utilities can pose hazards. Striking a gas line can lead to explosions or hitting an electrical cable can result in electrocution and even death.

  • Preventing service disruptions and costly repairs

    Damaging underground utilities can disrupt essential services including electricity, water and internet for your home and neighbourhood and result in costly repairs.

  • Environmental protection

    Striking a sewer line or other environmental utility can cause contamination and environmental damage.
