Public Art in Calgary

Public art in Calgary

Public art brings awareness to the spaces we move through, transforms landscapes and adds texture and interest. It can express community values and help shape Calgary’s identity. The City’s public art program is committed to acquiring impactful artworks that enhance Calgary’s urban landscape and transform the way people see, think about and experience the city.

Calgary's approach to public art

Public art tells Calgary’s stories and brings our shared spaces to life. To help make sure Calgarians stay connected to the art being created, The City partners with Calgary Arts Development, which leads the commissioning of new public artworks.

This partnership supports a community-focused approach to public art. Once a new artwork is commissioned, it becomes part of Calgary’s public art collection, with The City responsible for its ongoing care and conservation.

Public art is funded through one per cent of eligible capital project budgets — a standard practice across Canada. Both Calgary Arts Development and The City follow the Public Art Policy  to guide how public art is planned, created and preserved.
