Innovation Through Procurement

What is Innovation Through Procurement?

When we procure goods and services, we typically post detailed requirements of what we’re looking for to the market.  Instead of this process, Innovation Through Procurement (ITP) means we tell the market we have a problem to solve by posting a challenge statement. Through ITP, we work with start-ups and small- and medium-sized businesses who have innovative ideas or technology that could possibly solve our problem. This approach:

  • allows companies to have The City as their first customer
  • adds to Calgary's economic resilience
  • builds competitiveness by drawing industry talent to the organization and Calgary
  • enhances business support
  • creates economic growth and job creation

Benefits to the business community

We provide industry with resources and expertise to co-create, improve or evaluate potential solutions that may become part of our procurement processes.

How can I get involved?

Our challenge statements are posted on The City of Calgary's Ariba Discovery Page and on Alberta Purchasing Connection (APC). Potential suppliers will have an equal opportunity to bid on the projects.
