E-bikes, E-scooters, and Community Safety

A recent Facebook post from the Evanston Creekside community brought a serious safety concern to our attention: an e-motorcycle driving through a playground while children were present. Incidents like this are an important reminder that as warmer weather returns and e-bikes and e-scooters become more popular, we all need to understand the rules and our responsibilities when using shared public spaces.

In Calgary, legal e-bikes have rules around speed, equipment, and where they can be used, while high-speed electric dirt bikes are not permitted on sidewalks, pathways, parks, or bike lanes. Pathways have a 20 km/h speed limit, helmets are required for all e-bike riders, and sidewalk riding is not permitted. Riders who ignore these rules can face fines, and in some cases, enforcement can also apply when reckless riding creates unsafe conditions for others.

Shared spaces only work when everyone follows the rules and looks out for one another. If you see unsafe or illegal riding, please report it so concerns can be tracked and addressed.

Below you will find a poster created by the Evanston Creekside Community Association that shares this information, so residents can easily save and share it with others.

As we continue to talk about e-bike and e-scooter safety in our communities, it’s also worth noting that May is Motorcycle Safety Month in Calgary. Safe riding matters across all forms of two-wheel travel, whether on pathways, roadways, or in neighbourhood spaces.

For those interested in local mobility initiatives, there are also current partnerships supporting free e-scooter and e-bike trips at select Calgary Transit stations, which highlights the growing role these modes of transportation are playing in our city.

Keeping our community safe is a shared responsibility. By understanding the rules, riding responsibly, and speaking up when something doesn’t seem right, we can help make sure our neighbourhoods remain safe and welcoming for everyone.
