How to Report Crimes and Protect Others
Residents have reported a number of vehicle thefts, break-ins, and incidents where people have been confronted and threatened for their belongings. These situations can be distressing, but by staying informed and looking out for one another, we can make our neighbourhoods safer and more secure. When neighbours support each other and work with law enforcement, they can help deter crime and create a safer community for everyone.
Stay Alert, be Aware of the “Bystander Effect”
One of the most powerful tools we have is awareness. If you see something suspicious, don’t hesitate—call 911 if it’s an emergency or report non-emergency incidents to the Calgary Police Service (call 403-266-1234 or visit their website at https://www.calgary.ca/cps.html ).
For those who are deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired, you can register and learn more about how to text 911 for emergencies at this webpage: https://www.calgary.ca/safety-contacts/texting-911.html.
If you notice a safety concern on or near public transit, you can text 74100 to report the incident or visit this webpage to learn more: https://www.calgarytransit.com/rider-information/safety-on-transit/transitwatch-program.html
If you notice a group of individuals engaged in a heated argument, acting aggressively, or following someone, take it seriously. The “bystander effect” can lead to inaction when people assume someone else will step in. If multiple people call to report the same crime, it’s ok, and it may help the police even more as multiple witnesses are able to describe the incident. This also helps The City identify the problem areas with reoccurring issues. It is always better when multiple people report the same crime, rather than assuming that someone else has or will report it.
When reporting a crime or suspicious activity, try to remember and share key details such as:
- Description of any vehicle involved (eg. license place, make and model, colour)
- Clothing descriptions (colors, logos, or distinctive features)
- Facial features and approximate age of individuals
- Direction of travel if suspects leave the scene
Don’t wait—your call could make all the difference in preventing crime or even saving someone’s life.
