Make Every Drop Count: Using Rainwater in Your Yard

Capturing and reusing rainwater is a simple way to keep your yard healthy while reducing the amount of treated City water you use during the summer. Rain barrels allow you to collect water from your downspouts and use it where it’s needed most, whether that’s watering garden beds, trees, or planters.

Using captured rainwater before turning on the garden hose can also help lower your summer water use. In addition to supporting your yard, rain barrels help reduce stormwater runoff into local creeks and rivers, which benefits Calgary’s wider water system.

Rain barrel rebate program returns in 2026

The City of Calgary’s rain barrel rebate program is returning in 2026 and is delivered through Green Calgary. The program is designed to make it easier and more affordable for residents to start using rainwater at home.

Eligible households can receive a $50 rebate per rain barrel, up to a maximum of three barrels per household. The rebate applies to the rain barrel itself and does not include accessories or add‑ons. Rain barrels must be purchased new, and receipts must be dated within 12 months of the application.

Applications will be accepted from April 1 to October 31, 2026, or until available funding is fully allocated. A total of 3,500 rebates are available on a first‑come, first‑served basis. Once an application is approved, residents should expect a processing time of approximately four to six weeks.

Learn more and apply

Full program details, eligibility requirements, and application information are available on the City’s website. Residents are encouraged to review the details carefully before purchasing a rain barrel or submitting an application.
