North Calgary Water Servicing | years of work behind today’s announcement

Today, the Government of Canada announced a $29-million contribution toward the first stage of the North Calgary Water Servicing Project. This is welcome news for Calgary and for the growing communities in our city’s Northwest.

This investment supports a major City project that has been planned over several years to strengthen water service for existing and future residents. The first funded phase represents approximately $123 million in construction, with the remainder funded by The City of Calgary.

I have fought for this project for years because north Calgary cannot keep growing without the core infrastructure to support it, and because Calgary cannot continue to grow without redundancies in our water infrastructure to safeguard service when something goes wrong. I have followed this file closely with City Administration to understand its timelines, local impacts and importance for Ward 2, and in 2024 I brought forward the Council amendment directing Administration to prioritize the North Calgary Water Servicing project, pursue the required investments through the Mid-Cycle Adjustments process, and advance the work as efficiently as possible in collaboration with regional partners.

This line is not just to service greenfield growth; it will add critical redundancy to Calgary’s regional water network and strengthen the system that also serves our regional communities. The project’s 22 kilometres of new water feeder main and supporting infrastructure will strengthen Calgary’s ability to move water through the system and provide additional backup capacity when infrastructure requires maintenance or repairs.

The first phase is expected to provide an additional 30 million litres of water capacity per day by early 2027. When the full system is operational, currently anticipated for late 2029, it is expected to deliver up to 100 million litres of water per day to north and northwest Calgary, with future capacity to expand further as Calgary grows.

Construction is already underway in several areas, including along Rocky Ridge Road and 144 Avenue, as well as at key water facilities. The current overall project budget is $533 million, and today’s federal commitment is an important contribution toward getting this work completed.

As construction moves forward, I will continue to follow the project closely, advocate for clear public communication, and raise Ward 2 concerns with Administration, particularly around construction impacts on roads, pathways, green space, and nearby communities.

Major infrastructure projects require careful planning, responsible budgeting, and consistent oversight. I am pleased to see this important investment moving ahead and will continue working to ensure Ward 2 residents are kept informed as milestones are reached.
