Ward 2 Community Safety Update

Lately I have been hearing concerns from some Ward 2 communities around safety in the neighbourhood, such as a recent Facebook post in the Evanston Creekside Community group, asking if Evanston is safe anymore.

While I don't speak for what safety looks like for you and your family, Ward 2 continues to trend safer than Calgary as a whole, with property crime down 17% and violent crime down 31% from January to August 2026 compared to the same period in 2025. Citywide, property crime rose 2% while violent crime fell 7%, meaning our ward has seen a greater decrease in both categories than Calgary overall. Furthermore, our rate of violent and property crime incidences is four times less than the city-wide average. These statistics, reflect the everyday efforts of residents who look out for one another and take simple steps to keep homes, vehicles, and public spaces secure.

While the numbers are encouraging, staying informed and proactive helps us maintain this positive outlook. I have gathered some statistics, along with practical prevention tips for the top three crime types reported in our communities. I have also included trusted local resources should you need support.

Vehicle Theft

Theft of and theft from cars, remains the largest criminal category in Calgary

• Lock all doors, close windows and sunroofs, even when parked in a garage.
• Remove valuables every time: phones, wallets, bags, sunglasses, loose change, shopping packages, and garage door openers.
• Never leave spare keys, vehicle registration, or driver’s licences inside your car; use digital insurance copies instead.
• Park in well-lit, high-traffic areas or secure lots with cameras and on-site security when possible.

Assault

• Stay aware of your surroundings, especially at night; walk in well-lit areas and avoid isolated shortcuts.
• Keep your phone charged and accessible; share your location with a trusted contact when walking alone.
• If you witness or experience harassment, threats, or assault, report it. Your information helps police identify patterns and keep others safe.
• Support neighbours who may be vulnerable; check in during extreme weather or community events.

Unlike break-and-enters or vehicle theft, there is often little individuals can do to prevent assault beyond staying aware of their surroundings and using common-sense safety practices. It’s important to remember that victims are never the problem, responsibility always lies with the person who causes harm. If something happens to you or someone you care about, you’re not alone. Break & Enter

• Adopt the “9 p.m. Routine”: check that all doors, windows, and garage doors are locked before bed.
  • Remove all valuables from vehicles
  • Close overhead garage door
  • Lock all doors and vehicles
  • Close and lock all windows
• Keep garage door openers with you, not in vehicles, and lock any interior doors between garage and house.
• Install motion-sensor lighting, secure second-storey windows, and consider alarm systems or doorbell cameras.
• Let neighbours know if you see doors left open or vehicles unlocked; look out for each other.

Community Resources and Support

District 7 Community Resource Office (Country Hills)

Community Resource Officers (CROs) are Calgary Police Service members who work proactively in neighbourhoods to build trust, strengthen relationships, and connect residents with resources. Rather than responding to 911 calls, CROs attend community association and business meetings, co-deliver crime-prevention workshops, and help design safety initiatives tailored to local concerns. They act as liaisons between communities and the CPS, share safety updates, and support both proactive and reactive operations that address neighbourhood priorities.

Calgary Police Non-Emergency Line

For suspicious activity, non-urgent crime reports, or general safety inquiries that don’t require an immediate 911 response, contact the Calgary Police Service non-emergency line. Trained staff can log your report, provide safety guidance, and connect you with the right resources or officers. This line helps free up 911 for true emergencies while ensuring your concerns are still heard and addressed.
