Country Hills Multi Services Centre

Location

Located on a five-acre (2.02 hectare) site at 11955 Country Village Link N.E., the Country Hills Multi-Services Centre provides Police, Fire, EMS, and Animal and By-law services to the rapidly growing communities in northeast Calgary.

The Country Hills Multi-Services Centre is located across from the new facility containing the Cardel Place Recreation Centre and the Calgary Public Library:Country Hills Branch.

Design

The exterior of the building is designed with a masonry sill, metal upper-panels as well as glass and brick accent walls. The interior design provides efficient space use for the four services within a 44,000 square foot (4,087.74 square metre) area. The facility also provides space for public meeting rooms.

The Centre includes two vehicle/equipment bays for the Fire Department and one vehicle/equipment bay for Emergency Medical Services.

Sustainable Building

The Country Hills Multi-Services Centre was designed and built with sustainability in mind. The Centre is "green," using energy and water resources efficiently. The results are lower operating costs and a more comfortable building for its occupants.

The integrated design approach and implementation of several LEED™ (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) strategies has allowed the Country Hills Multi-Services Centre project to achieve several sustainability goals.

The Centre is currently being evaluated by the U.S. Green Building Council for LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification and when approved will be the first City-owned building to attain the LEED™ Silver rating status.

Sustainable elements included in the building

  • Radiant heating and cooling (concrete floor and roof slabs)
  • Water-efficient toilets, urinals, showerheads and faucets
  • High performance envelope (R30 roof, R20 walls and Low E/Argon triple glazing windows)
  • Low off-gassing interior paints, adhesives, sealants, carpeting and other materials
  • Energy efficient lighting systems and controls
  • Stormwater is retained on site in a pond
  • The naturalized landscaping is exclusively irrigated through stormwater collected in the pond.

Some not-so-obvious sustainable or "green" benefits occurred during the construction of the Centre. For example, many building materials used had high recycled content.  Approximately 79 metric tonnes of construction waste was diverted from our landfills through recycling and salvage material programs. Finally, 71% of the construction materials used were manufactured regionally (within 800 km of the site). 

Community Involvement

To best meet the needs of the community, The City of Calgary consulted with and involved the community throughout the planning, design and development of the centre. Total development cost for the Centre, including land, utilities, landscaping, and construction was $10 million.
