Installed rooftop solar capacity

Less than one per cent of residential electricity use is offset by rooftop solar installations

Needs Improvement

Calgary is currently not on track to meet The City’s target of 15 per cent of residential electricity use being offset by rooftop solar by 2030.  However, Calgary is rapidly progressing in this area as the residential solar capacity has almost tripled since 2019.

Solar is a renewable energy source that reduces Calgary’s ecological footprint, increases Calgary’s supply of renewable energy, and reduces utility costs.

Since 2012, the amount of rooftop-mounted solar has steadily increased every year, supported by programs and funding by The City of Calgary (The City) and the Government of Canada.

The amount of rooftop solar in Calgary has been increasing since the early 2000s, with a recent and significant rise since 2016.  Most of this capacity is mounted on residential and commercial buildings.

Solar is growing

In 2022, more residential solar capacity was installed than the previous three years combined (2019-2021). Industrial and commercial solar capacity has also been increasing, with installed capacity more than tripling since 2019.

Residential rooftop solar in Calgary is supported by three primary programs:

The City’s Residential Solar Calculator allows Calgarians to view the solar potential of their home and forecast the energy savings/payback for their investment.

The Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP) gives Calgarians the opportunity to pay for energy efficiency upgrades using their property tax bill, solar PV is one of the eligible measures for financing.

The Greener Homes Grant (federal program) provides up to $5000 for homeowners to install solar PV systems.
