Calgary's Culture Days
About Calgary Culture Days
-
A Calgary tradition
Calgary Culture Days has been celebrated since 2014. Each year, more people participate and discover something new about our city, our stories and each other.
Culture Days showcases creatives, community groups and cultural organizations from all backgrounds in celebration of arts and culture in Calgary.
-
Why it matters
Arts and culture are at the heart of what makes Calgary a vibrant, welcoming city. They spark creativity, connect communities and breathe life into our neighbourhoods. From murals and music to film, festivals, and food — culture is everywhere.
Arts and culture creates jobs, attracts visitors and helps grow our local economy. Most importantly, arts and culture help us feel like we belong by sharing our stories and celebrating what makes each of us unique.
-
When it happens
Calgary Culture Days begins on Sept. 1, the same day as Alberta Day, which marks the anniversary of Alberta becoming a province in 1905. Events continue throughout September alongside Alberta Culture Days and line up with national Culture Days, which run from Sept. 19 to Oct. 12.

Frequently asked questions (click to expand)
Can I apply for more than one initiative?
Due to the limited funding pool, each organization may submit one application per intake. However, your initiative can involve multiple locations, partners, sessions or program components.
Am I eligible to apply if I have already received funding through The City’s Arts and Culture Division?
Yes, you can apply if:
- The direct costs associated with implementing the enhancements of the existing initiative or the proposed new initiative are not already covered by other funding sources, including the Festivals and Events Subsidy Program (FESP), Festival and Events Subsidy Program Innovation Microgrant (FESPIM), Arts and Culture Microgrant, Downtown in Motion Grant.
- The enhancement or new initiative will occur on Sept. 1 – 30, 2025.
An enhancement to an existing initiative could include:
- Adding an extra day
- Expanding the footprint of your event
- Adding a new programming element, like an interactive creative activity or cultural workshop
- Collaborating with a new partner to enhance the initiative through new programming, help increase accessibility and visibility of arts and cultural groups, etc.
- Safety enhancement.
Can I apply if my project budget exceeds $5,000?
Yes, you can still apply for the Culture Days Microgrant. However, it only covers up to $5,000 for eligible expenses. If your project exceeds this amount, you’ll need to secure additional funding from other sources to cover the remaining budget. For example, if your project budget is $10,000, the Culture Days Microgrant can fund up to half of it. Please include all expenses and funding sources (i.e., other grants, sponsorships, donations, entrance fees, etc.) in your application. It will be seen favorably if this grant is not the only revenue source.
What makes an initiative "publicly accessible"? Does my event need to be free?
Events should be open to the general public and take place in visible, inclusive locations — ideally outdoors or in community-oriented indoor spaces. Invite-only or members-only events are not eligible. We encourage free or low-barrier access. If your event has a fee, you must clearly explain how it remains accessible to the public (e.g., sliding scale, low cost, pay-what-you-can, free for underrepresented groups).
How are applications evaluated?
Applications are reviewed by a committee, formed by internal City staff based on:
Criteria | Weight |
---|---|
Alignment with program goals, community benefit, engagement and impact | 40% |
Accessibility, inclusion and equity | 20% |
Collaboration and partnerships | 15% |
Feasibility and logistics | 15% |
Marketing and outreach plan | 10% |
Total | 100% |
Are there other grants available for Culture Days initiative?
Additional funding opportunities that support arts and culture events, festivals and initiatives that enhance Calgary’s vibrancy, strengthen communities and enrich our city’s cultural landscape are available.

Culture Days Collaboration
Calgary Culture Days 2024 introduced an exciting partnership between Calgary Opera and two of Calgary’s popular cultural festivals: Taste of Italy and Fiesta Filipino.
This collaboration explored new opportunities for cultural exchange and helped raise awareness of Calgary Opera’s underutilized services. The City of Calgary’s Arts and Culture team facilitated the connection, provided funding to support event delivery, and helped create a more cohesive cultural experience.
The partnership drew more than 87,000 attendees over four days of performances and laid a strong foundation for future collaborations. It demonstrated the power of diverse engagement in shaping a vibrant and inclusive city.
