From June 15–17, 2025, Canada will host the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.

As a neighbouring city, Calgary is proud to welcome delegates, media, and guests from more than 20 countries and is supporting the summit through logistics, City services, and public safety coordination.

What is the G7 Summit?

The G7

The Group of Seven (G7) is a gathering of leaders from the world’s seven biggest advanced economies: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The European Union also takes part. Each year, these leaders meet to talk about the global issues that impact all G7 countries like the economy, climate change and peace and security.

Canada and Calgary at the G7 Summit

The event is led by Global Affairs Canada and the Prime Minister’s Office, in coordination with national security agencies and all levels of government. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is the lead agency responsible for security, working in collaboration with federal, provincial and municipal partners through the Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG). Together, they are ensuring the safety of residents, visitors and dignitaries during the event.

Staying safe

A multi-agency Integrated Safety and Security Group is in place to ensure the safety of Calgarians and visitors during the summit. The Calgary Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) is actively supporting preparedness and coordination efforts through the Emergency Operations Centre.

  • Emergencies

    Call 911 for any emergency requiring police, fire, or ambulance or if someone’s safety is at risk.

  • Police non-emergency

    Call 403-266-1234 for non-urgent police matters such as theft or property damage.

  • City services

    Contact 311 Calgary for City information and services including non-emergency and non-law enforcement related issues (e.g. bylaw issues).

  • Demonstrations

    The Calgary Police Service supports peaceful protest while ensuring safety of residents, visitors and businesses.

  • Security

What to expect during the G7 Summit

What can the public expect during the G7 Summit, and how will it affect traffic and commuting?

From June 15–17, Calgary will experience increased activity as international delegates, media, and visitors from more than 20 countries arrive for the G7 Summit in nearby Kananaskis. While this is a major international event, The City is working to minimize disruptions to daily life for residents and commuters.

During the summit, you can expect:

  • Increased motorcade activity and rolling road closures, especially around the airport, downtown core, and major transportation routes.
  • A visible increase in police and security presence across key areas of the city.
  • Minor travel delays, particularly when heading to and from the airport or west toward the mountains.

If you are commuting or traveling during this time:

  • Plan ahead and consider leaving at least 30 minutes earlier than usual when travelling to the airport.
  • Be aware that alternative routes may be activated to help manage traffic flow.
  • Consider using public transit, cycling, or carpooling to help reduce congestion and improve mobility.

While there may be temporary inconveniences, the G7 Summit also brings long-term benefits to Calgary. These include a boost in tourism, international media exposure, and economic opportunities for local businesses—especially in sectors like hospitality, retail and transportation.
