Beltline Community Investment Fund
Since 2006, The City has been accepting contributions from developers to the Beltline Community Investment Fund (BCIF). The intention of a developer-financed fund is to create an incentive for builders and investors to improve established communities, while providing enhancements to public spaces.

Contributing to BCIF allows developers to build greater density within the Beltline and allows The City and community groups to access funds to improve public spaces in the Beltline.
Funds can be used for projects like:
- Improved sidewalks and lighting
- Park and open space redevelopment and improvements
- Street trees
- Street furniture (benches, bike racks, garbage/recycling containers)
- Public art
- The purchase of land for the development of new parks and green spaces

Some examples of community initiated projects that have been partially or fully funded by BCIF include:

Beltline Urban Mural Projects (BUMP) Festival
BUMP Festival Art SocietyCommissions new public art murals throughout the Beltline – from towering building walls to “secret” alleyways – beautify public spaces, draw tourist to the community and create a sense of discovery for residents and visitors alike.

Connaught Open Street
Sustainable Calgary SocietyTransformed part of 10th Street S.W., (located next to Connaught School) into a permanent greenspace to provide a safer way for kids to get to school while creating a new public space for community members.

Better Bike Racks
Beltline Business Improvement AreaAids in placemaking and creating more vibrant streetscapes, while also providing functional bicycle parking.
City-initiated projects include:

The historical 1 Street S.W. underpass is one of Calgary’s two oldest railroad bridges, with elements that showcase the historic pass and contemporary meaning.

The historic McHugh House was moved to 17th Avenue and preserved on the east edge of Humpy Hollow Park site.

Shared e-Scooter/e-Bike corrals
Adding parking corrals in the Beltline for e-Scooters and e-Bikes to reduce sidewalk clutter and make sidewalks more accessible.
Application process
The BCIF Committee ensures that the distribution of BCIF grants meets community needs as the Beltline quickly grows and evolves. From funding to project completion, the BCIF projects includes:
- If requirements are not met, it is rejected by the Community Funding Strategies team.
- If requirements are met, a full application is accepted by the Funding team from the applicant.
Feedback is compiled and a review package is prepared for the BCIF Committee members.
The BCIF Committee members individually reviews and captures the following:
- Application
- Feedback notes from SMEs
- Scoring rubric
- Rank sheet
The Community Funding Strategies team collates the feedback, scores and ranks the application.
The BCIF Committee members meet to discuss applications and vote on every application.
