Memorial Dr. E and 36 St S.E. road improvements

Project Update – April 2026

Memorial Dr E. reconstruction

The City is completing a full-depth reconstruction of the westbound lanes of Memorial Dr E. Construction is expected to take several months.

Starting Wednesday, April 29, Memorial Drive westbound between 36 Street and 39 Street S.E. will be reduced to single-lane traffic as our contractor, Aecon Group Inc., begins the full-depth reconstruction of the roadway.

The work will be staged to complete reconstruction on the outside westbound lane first. We anticipate completing this initial phase in 3-4 weeks.

The lane closure will then shift to the outside westbound lane while Aecon rebuilds the inner lane over the following 3-4 weeks. The City will provide updates in advance of the scheduled traffic shift.

Construction will also include changes to intersection turn movements and pedestrian crossings. Please follow all on-site signage during construction.

Eastbound Memorial Drive will not be impacted during work on the westbound lanes.

A full closure of the Memorial Dr E. and 36 St S.E. intersection is planned during the May 16-18 long weekend. We will provide more detailed information in early May including detours and traffic accommodation plans.

36 St S.E. road improvements

Work will continue this year to complete improvements along 36 St S.E., including removing and replacing concrete, building the pathway along the west side of 36 St S.E. and finishing intersection tie-ins at Radcliffe Dr S.E. and 8 Ave S.E.

About the project

As part of a continuing program of major road restoration, The City is planning to complete pavement rehabilitation and road reconstruction on Memorial Drive E. from 36 Street S.E. to Marlborough Way/ 39 Street and 36 Street S.E. from Memorial Drive E. to 8 Avenue S.E. Multiple sections of the roadway show excessive distress, various cracking patterns and severity that have affected pavement performance.

This project will improve roadway operation, surface characteristics, and help to ensure the road continues to be safe, functional and in great condition for years to come. These upgrades will bring the road up to modern standards, improve traffic flow, enhance safety and pavement performance while improving connections for pedestrians and cyclists.
