11 Street S.W. Community Mobility Improvement Project

Project update - October 6, 2021

Work in progress:

  • West side of 11 Street S.W. (from 12 to 17 Avenue S.W.)
    • Construction on the new traffic calming curb extensions continues. Crews are now pouring concrete.
    • Sidewalk detours will be provided to maintain pedestrian access during construction.
    • We appreciate your patience as we work to safely implement these improvements along the west side of 11 Street S.W.

  • East side of 11 Street S.W. (from 12 to 16 Avenue S.W.)
    • To ensure crews can safely and efficiently complete construction on the east side of 11 Street S.W. the northbound vehicle lane is temporarily closed and there is no parking along the east side of the corridor.
    • Detour for people who drive – To travel northward, please follow the local detour signs and be sure to give yourself extra travel time.
    • Sidewalk detours are provided where necessary to maintain pedestrian access.
    • We appreciate your patience as we work safely to complete construction along the east side of 11 Street S.W. this fall.

Upcoming work:

  • Milling & repaving of 11 Street S.W., from 11 Avenue to 17 Avenue S.W.
  • Landscape rehabilitation along the 11 Street S.W. corridor.

Completed work:

  • Pre-construction utilities work, including the relocation of street lights.
  • All storm utility work along west side of 11 Street S.W. (at 13 & 15 Avenues S.W.)

Although road construction is always weather-dependent, we anticipate completing the work by the end of 2021. More construction information can be found in the Construction impacts section below.

Project overview

The City of Calgary is planning to improve access and connectivity for people who walk, wheel and drive along 11 Street S.W.

We are planning for improvements to 11 Street S.W., from 12 Avenue to 17 Avenue S.W., by implementing changes such as traffic calming to reduce vehicle speeds, improving accessibility and completing missing links for shared wheeling (cycling and scooting) lanes.

paving surface overlay is planned for 11 Street S.W. in 2021 and we will implement changes to the road at that time. Improvements to the street include separated lanes for people cycling and scooting, curb extensions, upgraded sidewalk ramps and improved pedestrian crossings.

Goals for the project are to:

  • Implement corridor improvements such as speed reduction, traffic calming and wayfinding.
  • Improve accessibility, network connections and provide more options for different modes of travel to the many businesses and parks along 11 Street S.W.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance existing facilities and improve connections for people who walk or wheel.

Construction impacts

As with all road construction projects, temporary localized impacts are inevitable, but we will do our best to minimize disruption to the community.

  • Work will be staged to limit the number of blocks impacted by construction at any given time, while still allowing for efficient and quick completion of construction.
  • Parking access will be limited along blocks during construction activities.
  • Lane closures and vehicle and pedestrian detours are necessary to accommodate construction.
  • To safely complete utility work, weekend intersection closures with local detours occurred in September (at 13 Avenue S.W. and 15 Avenue S.W.).
  • To ensure crews can safely and efficiently complete construction on the east side of 11 Street S.W., the north-bound vehicle lane is closed and there is no parking on the east side of the street.
    • Detour for people who drive – To travel northward, please follow the local detour signs and be sure to give yourself extra travel time.
    • Sidewalk detours are provided where necessary to maintain pedestrian access.
    • We appreciate your patience as we work safely to complete construction along the east side of 11 Street S.W. this fall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Construction

What improvements are being constructed?

Improvements we’re making on 11 Street include new separated wheeling lanes, traffic calming curb extensions, upgraded sidewalk ramps and improved pedestrian crossings.

When does construction start?

Pre-construction utilities work, including the relocation of street lights, was completed in July 2021. Road construction began in August 2021. We will continue to provide project updates via email and on this page.

How long will construction take?

Although road construction is always weather-dependent, we anticipate completing this project in 2021.

Will there be any road closures during construction?

As with all road construction projects, temporary localized impacts are inevitable. We are making every effort to minimize impacts during construction, including staging the work to limit the number of blocks impacted by construction at any given time, while still allowing for efficient and quick completion of construction.

Lane closures and vehicle and pedestrian detours will be necessary to accommodate construction.

To safely complete utility work, weekend intersection closures with local detours occurred in September (at 13 Avenue S.W. and 15 Avenue S.W.)

To ensure crews can safely and efficiently complete construction on the east side of 11 Street S.W., the north-bound vehicle lane is closed and there is no parking on the east side of the street.

  • Detour for people who drive – To travel northward, please follow the local detour signs and be sure to give yourself extra travel time.
  • Sidewalk detours are provided where necessary to maintain pedestrian access.
  • We appreciate your patience as we work safely to complete construction along the east side of 11 Street S.W. this fall.

See the Construction impacts section for more details on impacts as they become available.

Parking

How will parking and delivery/loading change on the corridor?

To improve accessibility and network connections and also provide more options for different modes of travel to the many businesses and parks along 11 Street S.W., all parking along 11 Street S.W. from 12 Avenue to 16 Avenue S.W. will be consolidated to the west side of the corridor.

Wheeling facility

Why are wheeling lanes being added to 11 Street S.W.?

11 Street S.W. is a key corridor in the downtown network. The new wheeling lanes will extend the existing facility that ends at 12 Avenue, south to 17 Avenue S.W. The new facility will not only connect to the cycle track network on 12 Avenue, it will also provide Calgarians with new ways to travel between Thompson Family Park, Connaught Park and Connaught School, and to businesses along 11 Street S.W.

What is a wheeling facility?

A wheeling facility (also called a cycle track, cycle path or cycle lane) is a lane separated from other modes of traffic. Providing separate facilities for those who wheel, walk or drive and makes sharing the road a more safe and predictable experience for everyone.

You can learn more about the types of cycle tracks and wheeling lanes and tips for cycling in Calgary here.

What do I need to know about clearing snow from a sidewalk beside a cycle track?

We have tips on snow-clearing a sidewalk beside a cycle track. Please review this information and share with contractors.

Curb extensions

What do curb extensions do?

A curb extension reduces crossing distance for pedestrians at crosswalks and intersections. It allows pedestrians and drivers to see each other when parked cars would otherwise block visibility. Curb extensions increase the likelihood that drivers will stop for someone waiting to walk across the road. Curb extensions also alert drivers to changing road conditions and encourage lower speeds when travelling through an intersection or turning right by narrowing the road.
