Ward 2 - Jennifer Wyness

December Newsletter

This week, I had the opportunity to visit the Hawkwood Community Association AGM, where I answered questions and chatted with residents about their concerns and feedback.

One common topic was this year's Budget Adjustments vote by City Council, where nine City Councillors voted in favour of shifting the tax burden away from businesses and onto homeowners.

I was one of few who voted against this initiative.

It has been clear to me for a long time that struggling Calgarians are not in a position to carry the tax burden of non-residential properties. This budget already promises hundreds of millions of dollars towards growing business and revitalizing the downtown core. Only months ago, City Council debated housing affordability in Calgary.

We should be protecting Calgarians, not asking them to pick up the slack.

I will be updating my full and transparent voting rationale to update you on why I voted against this year's budget adjustments. Be sure to bookmark our main Ward 2 webpage and check back for updates.

Newsletter, December 2023

As we enter the holiday season, families are gearing up for a winter of fun, filled with plenty of holiday cheer. But what do you do when things don't go as planned? Here are some tips to make sure you’re keeping safe and warm and you are prepared for the cold winter season.

What do you do if your water isn’t working?

If you wake up one morning and the taps aren’t running, don't panic! Here are some steps you can take:

CHECK your front door – If a water outage happened overnight City crews may have left a notice.

CONSULT calgary.ca/wateroutages – Water main breaks and repairs are listed by community.

CALL 311 - To report an outage if your water is off and you have not been notified.

We know you rely on us to provide reliable access to clean and safe water. When outages happen, we work to notify you and restore service as quickly as possible.

Under normal circumstances, water main breaks are repaired, and water is back on within 48 hours. We prioritize breaks based on the risk of property damage, impact to critical facilities like hospitals or schools and the number of customers out of water.

For extended outages we will provide residential customers with a temporary water source. For shorter outages, and to support you while water wagons, we recommend keeping a small emergency supply of water on hand.

Visit calgary.ca/wateroutages to learn more.

Stay Warm: Online Map Shows Winter Emergency Services

Weather in Calgary can be unpredictable. In the events of extreme cold weather, there are services around the city to support residents experiencing homelessness. The Cold Weather Emergency Supports online map shows the location of each service station, including overnight shelters, daytime services and warming stations.

You can visit the interactive map at https://maps.calgary.ca/ColdWeatherEmergencySupport

As always, everyone is welcome to contact my office if you have any questions or concerns. Stay warm!
