How to Prepare for and Respond to Hailstorms in Calgary
Every summer, we hope for sunny skies and warm evenings. But in Calgary, we also know that with summer comes the risk of severe weather. Hail season runs from June to September, and many of us remember all too well the storm in 2024 that left a trail of damage across our neighbourhoods.
Since that storm, my office has heard from many residents who weren’t sure what to do in the aftermath—who to call, where to go, or how to get help. I wanted to put together a few key steps and resources to make sure we’re all better prepared, and to make recovery a little easier if another storm does hit.
Before the Storm
We can’t stop hail from falling, but we can be ready for it:
- Check your insurance policy to make sure you’re covered for hail and storm damage.
- Secure your property: tie down patio furniture, close umbrellas, and move breakables indoors.
- Park vehicles in covered areas when a storm is in the forecast.
- Direct downspouts away from your home and ensure gutters are clear.
- Sign up for weather alerts and keep an eye on incoming systems.
More tips can be found at calgary.ca/ClimateReadyHome.
During a Storm
Your safety comes first:
- Seek shelter right away—inside your home, garage, or even a covered bus stop.
- Stay away from windows, skylights, and glass doors.
- Avoid flooded streets and large puddles if you’re driving or walking.
After the Storm
If your property has been damaged:
- Document everything: Take photos of all damage before making repairs.
- Call your insurance provider right away. The sooner you report, the sooner help can begin. Waiting could mean longer delays. Make sure to keep any damaged property on-site until your claim has been processed.
- If you’re not sure what to do, contact the Insurance Bureau of Canada at 1-844-227-5422 or email askibcwest@ibc.ca.
- For damaged trees, check with your insurance provider before removing any debris. Once you receive the go-ahead from them, you should do the following:
- Look at each of your trees. Check to see if there is a disturbance in the soil, cracks in the trunk and or main branches.
- Be Cautious. Look for any hazards around your trees that any broken limbs have damaged or could damage.
- Call an ISA certified arborist to help clear debris, assess and properly prune your damaged tree. See below for tips on finding a reliable contractor.
- If you are unsure if the damaged tree is on private property or City-owned property, call 311 and they will let you know who is responsible for removing the debris.
- Make sure to document and report storm damage through 311, which allows the City to track the areas that were hit the hardest. This helps improve their response so they can target and provide assistance to residents who are the most impacted by the storm. You can report storm damage by calling 311 or through the 311 app, which can be downloaded here: calgary.ca/311
Finding a Contractor You Can Trust
Sadly, we’ve seen dishonest contractors take advantage of homeowners after major weather events. If you need to hire a contractor, please make sure to:
- Call 311 to confirm a business is licensed in Calgary.
- Contact the Better Business Bureau at 403-531-8784.
- For roofing, use certified AARA or ARCA inspectors.

City Support & Debris Cleanup
If a storm causes widespread damage, the City will place neighbourhood debris bins in affected communities to help with cleanup. We’ll share those locations on calgary.ca/ward2 and through my social media channels.
If you or your family are feeling overwhelmed or need emotional support after a storm, you’re not alone. Please call 2-1-1 or visit ab.211.ca for mental health and crisis resources.
As always, my office is here to help you navigate City resources, get answers to your questions, or connect you with the right support. If you’re ever unsure about what to do after a storm, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Let’s be prepared, look out for each other, and make sure we’re ready for whatever this summer brings.
