Taxi, limousines, ridesharing

We license and regulate the vehicle-for-hire industry, including taxis, limousines and ridesharing companies. That means making sure drivers have the right security checks, qualifications and insurance, and their vehicles have undergone mechanical inspections, so you can have a safe ride.

Livery Transport Bylaw review

On May 27, 2019, Council approved the accelerated review of the Livery Transport Bylaw, which regulates drivers, vehicles and companies in Calgary's taxi, limousine and rideshare industry. In 2016, the Bylaw was revised to allow rideshare companies to operate legally in Calgary. Now that rideshares have been part of our vehicle-for-hire options for over three years, The City is reviewing the Bylaw to make sure the regulations are still supporting customers and industry participants.

In 2019, Phase One of the Bylaw Review project involved the completion of several deliverables, including a  discussion paper,  best practices review,  guiding principles for the Bylaw Review and stakeholder and public engagement. Phase Two of the Bylaw Review includes preparation of regulatory framework options for Council direction in July 2020, followed by further engagement and delivery of an amended Bylaw to Council, by Q1 2021.

Livery Transport Advisory Committee

As the result of a Council Committee decision on December 6, 2017 the Livery Transport Advisory Committee (LTAC) has been disbanded. As of January 1, 2018 Administration has assumed direct responsibility for livery industry stakeholder consultation, the role formerly fulfilled by LTAC. The 2017 agendas and minutes for LTAC and its subcommittees are still available.
