Anti-racism resources

We’ve assembled resources to help you learn about racism, its impacts and what can be done to combat it.

Defining racism

Racism stems from the belief that some groups of people are better than others because of their race. How people are treated, who has more power or privilege, and who gets more opportunities are ways it manifests in everyday life. Racism isn’t just about individual actions—it’s also built into rules, systems, and institutions that keep inequitable treatment going. Both personal attitudes and larger systems work together to keep things inequitable. Expand each topic below for resources to further your learning.

Anti-Asian Racism

Anti-Asian racism has a long history in Canada, starting with discriminatory laws and policies that targeted Asian communities, such as the Chinese Head Tax, the internment of Japanese Canadians during World War II, and the exclusion of South Asian immigrants. These injustices were based on harmful beliefs that Asian people didn’t belong.

Racism against Asian Canadians has seen a troubling increase in recent years. According to Statistics Canada, from 2022 to 2023, hate crimes reported by Arab and West Asian populations increased 52 per cent and among the South Asian population it rose 35 per cent. In fact, hate crimes targeting the South Asian population rose 227 per cent from 2019 to 2023.

Here are some resources that will assist in addressing anti-Asian racism by encouraging us to learn the history, challenge stereotypes, support those who experience racism, and work together to build welcoming, respectful, and inclusive communities.
