When planning your special event, there are several factors to consider. Whether you’re planning a Stampede event or a holiday event, the Calgary Fire Department is available to assist to ensure a safe event. We encourage event organizers, sponsors and vendors to be familiar with safe-fire practices and procedures for all events, whether inside a building, outside with cooking booths or in a temporary tent.
To work collaboratively with the Calgary Fire Department for the fire-safe planning of your event, please call 311.
Responsibilities of event organizers
A vendor must comply with all fire and safety regulations at all times while participating in special events.
Fire safety codes officers for events
One or more standby Fire Safety Codes Officers may attend your event before and during the activity for the safeguarding of life and property.
Fire safety plans for events
All events that occur in Calgary have to comply with specific National Fire Code (Alberta Edition) requirements. One of these requirements is to have a fire safety plan. When submitting your permit application, two copies or an electronic copy of a floor/area layout must be included.
Tents and air-supported structures
All tents must conform to the Alberta Building Code and the National Fire Code (Alberta Edition).
Cooking booths at events
In order to increase fire safety for both booth operators and the public, requirements must be met when portable exterior (open-flame cooking devices/booths) are used during a special event:
Straw or hay bales for public events or displays
The Calgary Fire Department guideline to all users and suppliers of display straw bales within the City of Calgary.
