Current Approaches to Building for Resilience and High Performance in Alberta
As Alberta navigates the challenges of climate change and energy transition, resilient and high-performance buildings are becoming essential to a sustainable future. This session, hosted by Alberta Ecotrust, brings together insights from leading initiatives focused on advancing building practices across the province.
Participants will hear key findings from the Emissions Neutral Buildings Information Exchange (ENBIX) research project, which explores strategies for reducing operational emissions in Alberta’s built environment. The Retrofit Accelerator team will share practical approaches to enhancing resilience in commercial buildings, including measures that address climate risks and energy efficiency. Additionally, Passive House Alberta, an Alberta Ecotrust Foundation grantee, will present compelling case studies showcasing low-embodied-carbon building assemblies and their role in reducing lifecycle emissions.

Community Climate Action Through the ClimateReadyYYC Program
Discover how Calgarians are leading the way in community-driven climate action through the ClimateReadyYYC grant program. Funded by the City of Calgary and administered by the Federation of Calgary Communities, this initiative has supported 21 innovative projects that help communities adapt to climate change and build resilience - especially for those most vulnerable to its impacts. In this session, grant recipients will share their experiences, showcasing creative and practical solutions like climate education, green infrastructure, and local sustainability efforts. Learn how these projects are strengthening neighborhoods and explore ideas that can be scaled or replicated to foster a more climate-ready Calgary. This grant program also empowers first-time applicants and grassroots groups by removing barriers to participation and building capacity for successful climate action.

Andrew Mills
Andrew Mills is the volunteer organizer of the annual Eco-Solar Home tours that show net-zero and energy efficient homes in Edmonton and Calgary. The 2025 tour had 1,400 visits to 31 homes this past June. Andrew lives in Edmonton in his 1949 net-zero energy home.
Andrew was the containment specialist at Layfield Geosynthetics, developing geomembranes for water, waste water, and the secondary containment of fuels and chemicals. In 2017 he led a project to develop utility-scale floating solar for water reservoirs which led to a patent on a solar floating cover

Cortney Hlady
Cortney Hlady, BSc., BASc., MPH, CIPHI(C), is a Public Health Inspector with Alberta Health Services’ Healthy Physical Environments team, specializing in environmental public health review of land use and development proposals. With over a decade of experience in environmental health, Cortney supports planning authorities by assessing potential public health impacts of proposed developments and plays a subsidiary role in other climate change initiatives such as wildfire smoke mitigation and water reuse. Her work encourages the incorporation of Healthy Communities by Design (HCBD) pillars, integrating health considerations into urban planning to foster safe, equitable, and sustainable communities.
Crystal Hanson
Crystal Hanson is a purpose-driven fundraiser and community builder whose work is grounded in resilience, healing, and connection. A young adult breast cancer survivor, Crystal knows firsthand how deeply life can be reshaped by unexpected challenges; and how powerful community support can be in recovery. After her diagnosis, she pivoted her career to raise vital funds for Wellspring Alberta, a charity offering free programs that support people living with cancer and their families. |
David Sauchyn
Dr. David Sauchyn has been in various roles at PARC over the past 21 years, including Director since 2017. Dave is also Professor of Geography and Environmental Studies. He has been with the University of Regina since 1983. His research interests are 1) the climate and hydrology of the past millennium and how this knowledge of the past can inform our understanding of future climate and water supplies, and 2) planned adaption to minimize the adverse impacts of climate change on the natural capital of western Canada. Dave was the lead author of the Prairies Provinces chapter of the national assessment of climate change released in late 2020. |
Frank Crawford
Frank is Professional Civil Engineer and a Certified Passive House Designer and Tradesperson. He designed, built and now live in one of the first Alberta homes built to the International Passive House Standard. Through his work as an Energy Efficiency Consultant, the Education Committee lead of Passive House Alberta and a Passive House Canada instructor, he help others learn how to achieve the benefits of building or renovating to a High Performance Building standard while minimizing the embodied and operational carbon and capital costs. |
Garrett Clark
Garrett guides building owners to improve energy performance, reduce emissions, and develop asset-renewal aligned retrofit plans. He is a professional engineer with experience in long-range emissions modelling, technoeconomic assessments of low-carbon technologies, energy and emissions planning, and project management. |
Grace Brown
Grace is a Corporate Environmental Specialist at the City of Calgary. She manages The City’s ChargeYYC program, which focuses on making electric vehicle charging more accessible for Calgarians living in multi-residential buildings. She previously worked with the Pembina Institute on electric utility innovation and regulatory reform, and spent over five years in the U.S. solar energy sector, specializing in legislative and regulatory issues to support the growth of distributed energy technologies. |
Jared Blustein
Jared was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, and from a young age fell in love with the foothills, prairies and mountains. He became involved in activism and the nonprofit sector after witnessing the interconnected impacts of Indigenous land dispossession, socio-economic injustice, and human-driven climate change. After completing a graduate degree in 2017, he co-founded The Allium Restaurant and Bodega Worker Cooperative, which closed in the summer of 2023. Jared brings years of climate focused nonprofit experience, and is excited to now be part of the Calgary Climate Hub! |
Jay Islam
Jay is the Manager of Government & Member Relations for the Building Owners’ and Managers Association (BOMA) of Calgary. Jay is an accomplished public policy professional with a background in both analysis and advocacy in a wide range of fields. He started his career in market analysis and compliance before pursuing a master’s degree in political science from Simon Fraser University. In his recent roles, Jay has focused on advocacy, government as well as stakeholder relations, policy writing and analysis. He has also supported member-driven organizations discover and implement practical solutions on a wide range of challenges, with his current role focusing the commercial real estate industry in Calgary.

Juan Monterrosa
Juan Monterrosa is a P.Eng and LEED accredited professional and a Certified Passive House Consultant. He is currently the Senior Program Manager at the Emissions-Neutral Building Information Exchange (ENBIX) at Alberta Ecotrust Foundation which aims to be a convener and collaborator with building stakeholders to democratize information and increase capacity in designing and constructing emission neutral buildings. Previously, Juan spent 7 years at the City of Edmonton in leadership roles such as Branch Manager of Development Services, and Director of Safety Code, Permits and Inspections. Dr. Keith Porter is chief engineer of the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction. He spent 30 years estimating the costs and benefits of climate and seismic adaptation. Governments, utilities, Fortune-500 firms, and others regularly use his work. |

Laura Shutiak
Laura has a BA in Journalism and Communications, and has had many different careers – college teacher, communicator, journalist, sporting goods guru and public education advocate. A parent of three adult children, she recognized the simple freedom of getting on a bike to get places is not available to many kids in our city because they don't own a bike, or don't know how to ride one. She launched Youth en Route in 2021, and has nurtured and directed its work as executive director. Her newest skills are bike rack fabricator, circular-economy specialist and adaptive biking coach. Since its inception, Youth en Route has refocused twice, changing what they do and how they do as they collect data and learn. The mission is to have more youth choosing the freedom and independence that comes from biking places. |

She brings over 20 years of experience in urban planning and inclusive design at the City of Calgary, with a focus on advancing social, environmental, and economic equity in the built environment through policy and implementation. |
Morgan Rice
Morgan is dedicated to enhancing resilience in Calgary. She’s been leading work to help Calgarian’s better protect their homes as extreme weather events intensify due to climate change. She’s the project lead for the Alberta Climate Ready Homes project and has been focused on developing and implementing The City’s Hail Resilience Program which includes establishing and coordinating he Hail Resilience Improvement Network. This network brings together different sectors to cultivate new partner initiatives, coordinate information and resources, and innovate new tools for improving hail resilience in Calgary. |

Paulah Madzinga serves as the Wellness and Program Coordinator at Norfolk Association, leading programs that promote environmental responsibility, community wellness, and resident engagement. Philip Barber
Philip Barber is a Professor in the Departments of Clinical Neurosciences, Community Health Sciences, Medicine and Radiology and the Director of the Stroke Prevention Clinic. I am a core team member of Brain Climate Equity Collaborative which is a Canadian foundation addressing how climate change is contributing to neurological disease (such as stroke and dementia), disproportionately impacting communities (low socioeconomic, Indigenous) and people (pregnant, children, elderly). I led and authored the Canadian Stroke Consortium’s Climate Action and Health Sustainability Policy Statement. |

Ruth DeSantis
Ruth DeSantis, M.A. is a seasoned environmental specialist with over 15 years of experience inn climate adaptation, stakeholder engagement, and ecological planning and policy development. Currently serving as a Corporate Environmental Specialist, Ruth leads innovative climate resilience initiatives for the City of Calgary, including convening the Climate Resilient Communities working group, implementation of ClimateReadyYYC and heat and wildfire smoke research. She is committed to elevating the voices of equity denied Calgarians in climate adaptation programming through the privilege that she holds to build community resilience. She has held roles with Alberta Environment, where she facilitated multi-stakeholder collaborations on wildlife conflict, caribou planning, and watershed resilience. Her academic foundation includes a Master of Arts in Geography from the University of Guelph, with a specialization in climate adaptation and resilience, and a Bachelor of Arts in Geography from Thompson Rivers University.
Samantha Murphy
Samantha Murphy is an environmental and sustainability professional with over 15 years of experience in the energy sector, spanning oil and gas, power generation, and utilities. She began her career as a hydrogeologist, developing technical skills in water resources management, contaminant hydrogeology, and risk management in project across North America. In her current role as Manager, Sustainability & Indigenous Relations at ENMAX, Samantha leads climate initiatives and the development of ENMAX’s annual ESG report. This work includes facilitating physical risk scenario planning, benchmarking performance against industry peers, and other sustainability-related projects. She is also responsible for implementing ENMAX's Indigenous Relations framework. |

Stephen Wilton
Steve Wilton is a Cardiologist and Associate Professor at the University of Calgary. He has a research program focusing on the prevention and treatment of common, high-impact cardiovascular diseases. Zak Cunningham
Zachary (Zak) Cunningham holds an MSc in Sustainable Energy Development from the University of Calgary, a B.Eng (Hons) in Petroleum Engineering, and a diploma in Petroleum Engineering Technology. Zak began his career in the oil and gas industry in the field, having spent extensive time on drilling and workover rigs in Western Canada and deepwater offshore in Malaysia in various roles, leading him to spend nearly a decade living overseas in Southeast Asia. Zak strongly connects with his Métis culture and the Métis community within Alberta and is particularly interested in sustainable energy development in remote Northern communities. |
