Energy Efficiency Day

Energy Efficiency Day

Energy Efficiency Day is a globally recognized day to learn how energy is used, where it’s wasted and how to use it better in everyday life.

Energy-efficient choices can help our planet, support jobs and offer ways for people and businesses to save money.

The City recognizes Energy Efficiency Day on the first Wednesday of October each year (this year: Oct. 1, 2025).

Best practices

Together we can be energy efficient year-round by adopting energy-efficient practices. Here are a few ways to start:

  • Wash clothes in cold water.

  • Wait for a full load to do the laundry.

  • Hang clothes to dry outside on a line or inside on a drying rack.

  • Wait for a full load to run the dishwasher.

  • In summer, close window coverings to help keep your home cool.

  • In winter, open south-facing window coverings to help keep your home warm.

  • Weatherstrip doors and windows to reduce drafts.

  • Use a programmable thermostat to adjust the temperature when you’re not home.

  • Turn down your thermostat to 17°C (63°F) when you’re away for more than three hours or when you’re asleep.

  • Turn off lights in rooms not in use.
