The Downtown Safety Leadership Table, a group of downtown leaders brought together to help identify ways to address safety and promote vibrancy in downtown Calgary, released 28 recommendations in March 2024.
Now six months in, this innovative partnership between United Way of Calgary and Area, The City of Calgary and the Calgary Police Service brings together agencies from across the region to triage complex cases and co-ordinate community supports.
As a result of the significant investments Council has made to improve transit and community safety, The City continues to expand its peace officer numbers.
Starting July 4, Calgarians and visitors will see updated lighting in the Municipal Plaza. The need for lighting updates came from a crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) review that suggested increasing lighting levels of the exterior plaza to meet new building code standards.
Community programs could be an alternative to fines in new initiative being piloted in partnership by The City, Calgary Legal Guidance and Alberta Justice.
These programs can be accessed at no cost for people looking to receive help in either leaving a gang or helping a friend or family member leave a gang.
