Downtown Washroom Attendant Pilot Project

Downtown is the economic and cultural heart of Calgary. It is the central hub for business, innovation, and creativity. We are committed to supporting a downtown that is vibrant and welcoming for all Calgarians and visitors.

Since May 2023 and over the summer months, The City ran a Downtown Washroom Attendant Pilot Project in two busy downtown parks: Olympic Plaza and Century Gardens. The pilot project was intended to help improve the overall user experience of these public washrooms and was partially funded by the Government of Alberta.

With the end of summer, the pilot project has now concluded as we move into the evaluation period. The feedback we have collected throughout the pilot will be used to inform our next steps for the program.

Who was involved?

During the pilot, we partnered with AAWEAR, creating employment opportunities for people who typically experience barriers to paid work including those with lived experience with mental health, addiction, or houselessness.

Washroom attendants were responsible for custodial services, monitoring of public washrooms and where appropriate, sharing information about available social supports with park visitors.

After the pilot project

The success of the pilot project is currently being evaluated after its conclusion. Should long-term funding be available, the potential for extending it will be discussed.
