Devonion Gardens
About the park
Located on 8th avenue S.W. between 2nd and 3rd Street, this glass enclosed space covers a full city block, approx. 2.5 acres. The park is maintained by the City of Calgary Parks.
The Devonian Gardens were originally designed by J.H. Cook Architects and Engineers. The park was donated to the City by the Devonian Group of Charitable Foundations and Calford Properties. The space held over 20,000 plants, koi ponds, bridges, and waterfalls. It opened to the public in 1977 and attracted international attention.
In 2012 Devonian Gardens underwent a major renovation. Many of the garden materials were aging and council committed $37 million for improvements and upgrades. The four-year project oversaw the installation of a living wall (a natural biofilter), and many new plants and trees, some from tropical locales. New water features, a space for corporate events, and a playground round out the features.
