Chapter 3: Supporting Growth
The South Shaganappi Communities share amenities, services, parks, open spaces and public facilities. However, no single community has everything residents need.
Communities rely on their interconnected features. These include commercial amenities and services, Main Streets and Activity Centres, recreational opportunities, and multi-use pathways that surround and weave throughout and between neighbourhoods.
Chapter 3 and Appendix A of the Plan include investment priorities for community improvements. These priorities don’t have funding or timelines yet. They may be implemented by The City, developers, or community organizations if and when funding becomes available.
The Plan identifies five goals that align with the Plan’s five core values. These goals guide local objectives to support the Plan’s vision. The goals include:
- Supporting diverse housing choices;
- Improving the mobility network and transit station areas, and;
- Investing in recreational opportunities and parks, open spaces and natural areas.
Specific actions are identified to achieve the supporting growth goals.
Diverse, Accessible, and Inclusive Housing Choices
Supporting diverse housing options to meet the evolving needs of existing and future residents
- Opportunities for diverse housing types and expand housing choices to meet Calgarians' evolving needs
- Support student, mixed-market housing and non-market housing

Safe and Well-Connected Mobility Options
Improving connectivity for all mobility options between destinations within and beyond the Plan area
- Improving linkages to key destinations
- Community corridor improvements
- Enabling people to live closer to public transit

Vibrant Transit Station Area Hubs
Strengthening transit station areas as community hubs for services and amenities
- Focus growth near Red Line LRT & MAX Orange BRT
- Create vibrant transit hubs with services, amenities and public infrastructure

Recreational Opportunities for All Ages and Abilities
Providing affordable and accessible recreational opportunities for all
- Support affordable, inclusive recreation for all ages and abilities
- Enhance recreational facilities like Shouldice and Foothills Athletic Parks

Protected and Enhanced Parks, Open Spaces, Natural Areas, and Bow River Pathway System
Enhancing and conserving existing parks, open spaces, and natural areas
- Invest in parks, open spaces, and natural areas like Shouldice and Dale Hodges Parks
- Protect and enhance the Bow River Pathway with scale transitions and natural area improvements
