Potential Heritage Tax Incentives – Property Owner Survey

The City of Calgary is exploring potential future tax incentives to support the conservation of properties with identified heritage significance. We are seeking feedback from property owners of sites listed on Calgary’s Heritage Inventory to help inform recommendations to City Council.

What is the Heritage Inventory?

The Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources (Heritage Inventory) is a listing of properties which have been identified by Heritage Calgary as having historic and cultural significance according to a Council-approved Evaluation System.

Being listed on the Inventory:

  • Recognizes a property’s heritage value
  • Does not place legal restrictions on your property
  • Does not limit the ability to alter, sell, or redevelop
  • Does not change land use or development rights

Unless a property owner voluntarily requests legal protection, all normal land use and development rules continue to apply.

What is Municipal Historic Resource designation?

Municipal Historic Resource designation is voluntary and provides legal protection for eligible heritage buildings or features.

Designation:

  • Prevents demolition
  • Requires approval for changes to certain historic features (typically exterior elements)
  • Does not restrict property use or ownership rights

Designation requires a property owner to request it, and City Council to approve.

Why are tax incentives being explored?

The City is considering whether municipal property tax incentives could encourage voluntary designation. Any potential incentives would be subject to City Council approval and funding.
