Project update - July 2021

Thank you for sharing your ideas and input on the Future of 16 Avenue. The recommendations were passed unanimously by the Standing Policy Committee (SPC) on Transportation and Transit on Wednesday, June 16 and then passed by Council on July 05.

The recommendations included:

  • Receive the short-term recommendations of the Future of 16 Avenue N.W. for information;
  • Approve and adopt the medium- and long-term recommendations of the Future of 16 Avenue N.W., for the West and East Segments as summarized in Attachment 1, Executive Summary; and
  • Direct Administration to continue to protect the 10.363m bylaw setback along the south side of 16 Avenue N.W. in Montgomery between 46 Street and MacKay Road for flexible use of public space as needed.

Next steps

Short-term recommendations will be implemented using existing City programs and budgets. Implementation begins this summer. You can find more information on the changes and timelines here.

The medium- and long-term recommended plans are unfunded at this time with no fixed dates for construction. If approved, recommendations from the project will enable changes to 16 Avenue to be prioritized for funding. Medium-term recommendations may be implemented in the next five to ten years, with the long-term recommendations being implemented beyond 20 years.

About the project

Each of Calgary’s roads plays a role in the transportation network that reflect the priorities in Calgary’s Transportation Plan. An outcome of the project was to develop a balanced, integrated plan that recognizes both the city-wide function of 16 Avenue N.W. as a skeletal road and its role as an urban boulevard, community Main Street in Montgomery.

The project had two deliverables:

Together, these plans demonstrate how we are investing in our existing communities in the short-, medium- and long-term so they have the right infrastructure to grow and be successful for people who live there now and in the future.

Project progress

The engagement strategy for the project was informed by the Transportation Corridor Study Policy and Main Streets Program. A three-phase engagement process first introduced the project and sought to understand community and City priorities, then identified and evaluated concepts. Recognizing the different environments and stakeholders in the distinct geographic areas in the West, Main Street and East Segments, the information and feedback activities were organized into three sections of the project area in each phase.

For more information on the engagement process including the What We Heard Reports for each phase, view the engage portal.

How can I be involved in the study?

Engagement is now closed. We would like to thank participants for their time, sharing their perspective and continuing to work together to develop the recommendations.

How long before construction happens?

Short-term recommendations will be implemented using existing City programs and budgets. Implementation begins this summer. You can find more information on the changes and timelines here.

The medium- and long-term recommended plans are unfunded at this time with no fixed dates for construction. If approved by Council, recommendations from the project will enable changes to 16 Avenue to be prioritized for funding through The City’s 10-year transportation infrastructure investment plan – Investing in Mobility.

Medium-term recommendations may be implemented in the next five to ten years, with the long-term recommendations being implemented beyond 20 years.

The Main Streets program is currently working on five Main Streets projects. Once these Main Streets are complete, we will work with Council to determine funding for the next group of prioritized Main Streets. This will include the Montgomery Main Street.
