Lower Mount Royal Local Drainage Improvement and utility upgrades.
About the project
This project was completed in the summer of 2025. The work completed will provide increased flood protection and aged utility upgrades for residents in the Lower Mount Royal community. Utility upgrades in the community included treated water, sanitary and storm water infrastructure improvements. Additionally, curb to curb paving was completed throughout the project site upon completion.
Residents on the south side of 19 Avenue S.W. and the west side of 7 Street S.W., were commonly being impacted by localized flooding in their below-grade garages. Localized flooding occurs because of challenges related to location and topography, stormwater system capacity and property designs. This project was undertaken in an effort to protect homes from this type of flooding in the future.
Completed work
The completion of this project included the following:
- Replacement of standard catch basins with multiple super catch basins, capable of capturing more storm water, on 7 Street S.W. and 19 Avenue S.W.
- Installation of new, larger storm mains, to move storm water from the area at an increased rate, minimizing flooding during a major storm event that may occur once in up to 50 years.
- Incorporation of sumps into the new super catch basins to capture debris and sediments, helping to ensure that the pipe remains clean for a longer period, efficiently moving storm water at the highest possible capacities.
- Replacement of water mains, valves, hydrants, and services along 7 Street S.W. and 18 Avenue S.W.
- Replacement of sanitary mains and manholes including some services.
- New concrete sidewalks and a crosswalk with wheelchair accessible ramps at the corners of 19 Avenue and most of 7 Street S.W.
- New full width pavement in the project areas.
Project impacts
As a result of this work, Lower Mount Royal will be better protected against a 1:50-year weather event, greatly reducing the potential severity of impacts on Calgarians. The project also included aged utility replacement, upgrades and roadway paving, all of which will ensure Calgarians continue to receive the services they expect.
