Prohibited activities

Nearly half of Calgary’s water supply is drawn from the Glenmore Reservoir. Protecting our source water by limiting summer and winter recreational use is critical to ensuring high quality drinking water for Calgarians.

All winter recreation on the Reservoir, including walking, skating, skiing, biking and snowshoeing, is prohibited by City of Calgary Bylaws. (Glenmore Park Bylaw 9084, Water Safety Bylaw 9018, Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw 23M2006, Water Utility Bylaw 40M2006)

The water flowing into the reservoir is constantly moving, and levels change as water is withdrawn for treatment. This makes the ice unpredictable and dangerous.

Reservoir bylaws

The City creates and enforces bylaws to protect this valuable resource and the citizens who use it. The bylaws that regulate use of the Glenmore Reservoir are as follows:

  • Glenmore Park Bylaw (9084)
  • Water Safety Bylaw (9018)
  • Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw (23M2006)
  • Water Utility Bylaw (40M2006)

Highlights of bylaw regulations:

  • Boating use only between May 1 and October 31.
  • Approved Life jackets or self-inflating personal floatation devices must be worn at all times while the boat is on the water.
  • Water levels may be raised or lowered to manage Water Services systems.
  • No drinking of alcohol.
  • No pets in water, on boats or on ice. Pets must be on leash at all times in the Glenmore Park and on the shore of the reservoir.
  • No stand up paddle boards.
  • No swimming in the reservoir.
  • No inflatables.
  • No power motors.
  • No fishing from docks or ramps (fishing is permitted in non-motorized boats and along the shore).
  • No launching boats from undesignated shore areas.

Public safety

We help protect the safety of the public through the Glenmore Boat Patrol.

When Boat Patrol staff are on duty, a green flag is displayed at each of the three launch sites. The Boat Patrol can be contacted using the radios located near the green flags or by calling 403-268-2466.
