17 Avenue S.W. Construction

Project update - May 16, 2019:

2019 Construction Schedule

Work starts between 12 and 14 Street SW next week
Starting at 5:00 A.M. on Tuesday May 21, 2019, we will be closing 17 Avenue to traffic between 12 Street and 14 Street SW, including the intersection of 12 Street and 17 Avenue SW. Signage will be put out to direct motorists to the appropriate detour routes.

All sidewalks will remain open through construction and everyone will have access to all businesses, retailers and restaurants.

Work has started on 17 Avenue SW between 8 Street and 10A Street. Crews have installed construction fencing and have started workon the underground utility work.

Signs for detour routes are in place for motorists, and for Calgary Transit routes 2, 6, and 7.

14 & 15 Avenue one-ways
14 and 15 Avenue one ways have been extended between 11 and 12 Street S.W. 14 Avenue S is one westbound traffic lane, with parking on both sides of the street, and 15 Avenue S is one eastbound traffic lane, with parking on both sides of the street.

16 Avenue S.W. two-way traffic
There is a new two-way traffic set-up along 16 Avenue S.W. between 14 and 10 Street S.W. Parking will be converted to parallel parking to accommodate traffic, and will be restricted to the north side.

ENMAX projects in the area
ENMAX is also undertaking various improvements in conjunction with (and/or nearby) the 17 Avenue SW Reconstruction project area. One current active project is the Downtown Calgary Transmission Reinforcement Project. More information regarding this project can be found here.

Work completed so far
Not everyone knows what happens between the fences so we wanted to provide a snapshot of what has been completed so far. The 17 Avenue S.W. Reconstruction Project is providing new utility, road, and electrical infrastructure so that 17 Ave can continue to thrive for years to come. We are also investing in other pedestrian realm improvements like new sidewalks, streetlights, and new trees.

With the work over 65 per cent complete, this is a snapshot of what's been accomplished.

We're really into 17 Ave. S.W.

We're rebuilding 17 Avenue. Make sure to keep updated on the work, as we replace underground utilities and rebuild the road. We'll show you the best way to your destination on the Avenue no matter how you choose to get here. Here you'll be able to see all the ways to access businesses, shops, restaurants and parking in and around the construction zone.

The construction is making its way west, from Macleod Trail to 14 Street S.W., in one of Calgary's most vibrant neighbourhoods to eat, shop, and do business. The result will be a new 17 Avenue that will serve people who live, work, play and travel in the area for decades to come.

See what we've done so far!
