Bylaw enforcement and peace officers

The City of Calgary has a robust team of Community Safety peace officers that help keep Calgary safe and enhance the quality of life in our city. This is achieved by ensuring compliance with a range of municipal bylaws, notably the Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw and the Community Standards Bylaw.

What are Community Safety Peace Officers?

Community Safety peace officers respond to community safety and bylaw requests, including:

  • Untidy or unsafe properties
  • Dogs at large or aggressive animals
  • Reuniting lost pets with owners
  • Snow and ice not cleared from sidewalks
  • Improper behaviours or activities in parks and public spaces
  • Noise complaints
  • Encampment response
  • Supporting police during community events and protests

City of Calgary peace officers prioritize building relationships and educating citizens and neighbourhoods on local concerns and municipal bylaws. While they lead with education, they can issue warnings, tickets or orders when needed. They patrol communities by car, on foot, or bicycle throughout the day, ensuring visibility and accessibility for community interactions.

Community Safety peace officers work on specialty teams alongside other business units. Some of our teams include:

  • Traffic Safety Team

    Manages certain traffic safety issues, including in school zones and noisy vehicle concerns.

  • Problem Properties Team (CSRT)

    Address land or building sites in a state of disrepair with reoccurring violations related to safety codes, fire risks, bylaw violations or provincial health standards.

  • Vulnerable Persons Team (VPT)

    Responds to encampments and connects the unhoused population with support in collaboration with partners such as the Alpha House HELP Team.

  • Community Engagement Response Team (CERT)

    Reduces social disorder, manages illegal encampments, and addresses safety in public spaces alongside partners including the Calgary Police Service CERT team, Transit Public Safety, the Joint Encampment Team (JET), and the Alpha House HELP Team.

  • Animal Aggression Team

    Supports operations in animal aggression investigations and oversees aggression cases, manages nuisance and vicious animal designations, and manages the status and well-being of seized animals.
