 Water main replacement program

As part of the 2025 water main replacement program contract, water mains will be replaced along with some public and private water services in the following areas:

  • 40 Street S.W. (between 28 Avenue and 30 Avenue S.W.), Ward 6

 Schedule

Construction will take place from June to November. Each water main replacement is expected to take 2-5 weeks. The length of construction can vary depending on the condition of the soil, existing utilities, and weather.

Nearby residents will receive notification of the work in their community at least a week prior to the work beginning.

Construction impacts

  • Temporary water service, and possible water shut offs for nearby buildings.
  • Temporary street parking restrictions and/or closures.
  • Vibrations due to compaction.
  • Additional traffic and congestion due to construction activities and vehicles; in particular, impact to accessing parts of back lanes.
  • Flaggers will be on-site to assist with access to parking lots.
  • Tree pruning may be required for the safety of workers and to protect trees from accidental damage.
  • If sidewalks, curbs and gutters need to be removed they will be repaired to original or better condition.
  • Regular hours will be 7 a.m.–7 p.m. Mon to Sat.
  • Work will be completed in phases to cover open trenches as quickly as possible. However, some residents may temporarily lose access to their driveways. We will aim to provide temporary access to those driveways and move as quickly as possible to accommodate any impacted residents and/or businesses.

Temporary Water Service

For most of the duration of the construction activity, residents will be provided a temporary water supply. Should it be necessary to disrupt water service, all affected customers will receive notice at least a day in advance.

*Please note that internal fire suppression systems will not work if a building is being supplied by temporary water services.

Fluoride Reintroduction Reminder

As a reminder fluoride will start being reintroduced in the drinking water on June 30, 2025.

The City follows Health Canada’s Guidance on Community Water Fluoridation, which recommends optimal fluoride levels to be 0.7 milligrams per liter (mg/L). To protect public health, we will begin adding fluoride gradually starting June 30, carefully monitoring and adjusting the levels until we achieve the 0.7 mg/L optimal level.

Get the lowdown on slow downs: How we keep Calgarians moving

We know construction season can be frustrating The City of Calgary’s Mobility teams work in close collaboration with project managers and city event organizers to avoid multiple delays and plan for traffic flow congestion. The City’s Traffic Management Centre monitors roadways 24/7 by using traffic cameras, live traffic data and digital road signs, It’s not a pain when you have a plan. And we have Waze to help. The City partnership with Waze means you can get real-time traffic flow and construction updates right in the app. This free download is our preferred navigation tool because it syncs with The City’s advanced traffic system. With the right tools you can get to where you need to go. Learn more at http://www.calgary.ca/PlanYourTrip
