Crowchild over Glenmore Bridge Rehabilitation

Construction update - September 2023

Construction to rehabilitate the Crowchild over Glenmore bridge has started. Throughout construction, there may be delays due to reduced and/or closed lanes. We will make every effort to limit impacts on traffic; however, motorists are advised to expect delays and use alternate routes when possible. We anticipate the work will be substantially completed by winter 2023.

Traffic impacts

Upcoming Full Bridge Closure – September 29 to October 1
The next full bridge closure is anticipated to start Friday, September 29 at 9 p.m. and the bridge will re-open at or before 9 p.m. on Sunday, October 1. Refer to Map

The Eastbound Glenmore Off-ramp turning onto Southbound Crowchild will also be CLOSED for paving from 5 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 30. Commuters heading into Lakeview will need to take a detour through 37 Street or take an alternate route. Refer to Map

Note: The on-ramp out of Lakeview turning onto Eastbound Glenmore Trail from Crowchild North will remain open during this time.

Pathway Closure
To build the multi-use pathway, the west sidewalk on the bridge and part of the pathway on Crowchild Trail remain closed until October 15. Detour signage will be posted in this area to guide pedestrians and cyclists. Refer to Map

Ramp Closures
The following ramps remain closed for the duration of construction:

  • the ramp from Northbound Crowchild Trail turning left onto Westbound Glenmore Trail
  • the Westbound Glenmore Trail ramp turning onto Southbound Crowchild Trail

Note: Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.

Please follow all posted signage in the construction area including speed reductions and expect some delays. Detour signage will be in place to help direct traffic.

Walking and Wheeling Access
We anticipate access will remain open to those walking and wheeling on the bridge.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.

About the project

Built in 1981, the Crowchild bridge is a two-way, multi-lane bridge that spans above Glenmore and provides a connection primarily to the Lakeview community and beyond. Various parts of the bridge are deteriorating due to age and need rehabilitation. Ongoing regular maintenance along with timely major rehabilitations are critical to keeping bridges safe and reliable while minimizing future expenditures and extending the service life of these structures.

Scope of work

The rehabilitation work on the bridge structure will include:

  • general concrete repairs
  • improvement of pedestrian/cyclist mobility by creating a multi-user pathway on one side of the bridge
  • removal of the existing longitudinal expansion joint
  • life-cycling of signals

Benefits

The project benefits include:

  • improving the condition of the bridge and extending its service life by approximately 30 years;
  • removing the existing longitudinal expansion joint to help prevent future substructure deterioration;
  • improving traffic signal placement;
  • enhancing crosswalk markings and to improve visibility and accessibility;
  • promoting use of alternative and active modes of transportation by building a multi-use pathway;
  • improving one critical link in the transportation network to accommodate opportunities for Calgary's continued growth in the coming years.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Crowchild over Glenmore Bridge in need of repair?

A routine inspection identified structural elements of the bridge that require repair to extend the structure’s service-life by approximately 30 years.

Ongoing regular maintenance along with timely major rehabilitations are critical to keeping bridges safe and reliable while minimizing future expenditures and extending the service life of this type of structure. The project should greatly improve one critical link in the Transportation network and accommodate opportunities for Calgary's continued growth in the coming decades. Rehabilitation of bridges also supports good movement and universal access.

What planned work will be done to rehabilitate the bridge?

While the rehabilitation design work is yet to be complete, the scope of work will include:

  • general concrete repairs
  • mobility improvements by creating a multi-use pathway on one side of the bridge
  • removal of the existing longitudinal expansion joint
  • life-cycling of signals

Will this work impact the nearby sidewalk(s)?

Although there may be some delays, pedestrians and cyclists will always have access to the bridge during construction. We plan to improve crosswalks by enhancing the markings and updating the geometry to improve visibility and accessibility as well as to promote use of alternative and active modes of transportation by building a multi-use pathway.
