Bylaws related to dogs

Navigating Calgary's dog bylaws is crucial for fostering a positive neighborhood and ensuring your furry friend's well-being. Abiding by these regulations is an integral aspect of responsible dog ownership. Here's a breakdown of the key points from our Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw:

Licensing:

Leashing:

  • Keep your dog on a leash at all times unless indicated otherwise by posted signs or on your property where you have the right of occupation.

Transportation:

  • Dogs transported in the back of a truck must be secured in a fully enclosed trailer, a truck bed covered with a topper, or a ventilated kennel secured to the truck bed.

Waste Management:

  • Carry a suitable means to pick up after your dog, both on and off your property.

Off-Leash Areas:

  • In designated off-leash areas, dogs must remain in sight of their owners and respond to sight or sound commands.

Responsibilities as a Dog Owner

Ensure your dog does not:

  • Bite, injure, chase, threaten, or attack people or animals.
  • Bark or howl excessively, causing disturbance.
  • Cause damage to property or animals.
  • Scatter garbage.

Restricted Areas:

  • Dogs are not allowed in school grounds, playgrounds, sports fields, golf courses, cemeteries, or wading/swimming areas.

Pathway Etiquette:

  • While on a pathway, keep your dog on a leash no longer than two meters.
  • Stay on the right-hand side, avoid interfering with other users, and refrain from cycling, skateboarding, or in-line skating with a leashed dog.

  • The address and exact location of the property for which you wish to register a complaint.
  • A brief and concise description of the complaint.

This information will remain confidential. No anonymous complaints will be accepted - you must identify yourself with the 311 service representative.
