Ward 6 November 2025 Newsletter

Hello Ward 6,

It is my distinct honour to introduce myself as the newly elected Councillor for Ward 6. Now that the campaign has concluded, I am eager to continue being an active voice in our wonderful Ward 6 communities. On the 20th of October 2025, 348,865 Calgarians made their voice heard – electing 10 new Councillors – including myself, joining 4 re-elected incumbents. Additionally, Calgarians elected a new mayor, Jeromy Farkas. On the 29th of October, I was officially sworn in as Councillor for Ward 6.

This month, City Council and I are focused on delivering a budget that reflects what we all heard during the campaign – a need for fiscal responsibility, and a cost-first approach.

In this edition of the November newsletter, you will find information on information on the 2026 budget, blanket rezoning, changes to the procedural bylaw, committee appointment information, and much more.

I am ecstatic and honoured that you have chosen me to be your next City Councillor for Ward 6. I look forward to being an active voice in Ward 6 communities, and to building a transparent, fiscally responsible City Council.

-       Councillor John Pantazopoulos (CFA, ICD.D)

City Council's First Steps

One of the first actions City Council takes is delivering a budget that reflects the needs of our growing city. The proposed 2026 Budget can be found at this link.

As Calgarian’s continued period of high growth and inflation continues, it is imperative that City Council maximize value for our taxpayer dollars and uphold a strong sense of fiscal responsibility.

On the 10th of November, the Budget was presented to Council. Public submissions to Council and budget deliberations will occur between the 24th and the 28th of November. At the end of November, Council will vote to approve the budget.

In order to register to speak on the proposed 2026 Budget, please follow this link: Public Submission to City Clerk's Office.

Changes to the Procedural Bylaw

Council’s New Procedure Bylaw (42M2025)

On October 29th, 2025, City Council adopted a new Procedure Bylaw to improve transparency. New rules and deadlines apply for anyone wishing to provide input at Public Hearings or Standing Policy Committee meetings.

What’s changing?

Submission deadlines:

  • Public Hearings: Written or audio-visual submissions must be received by 12:00 p.m. (noon), eight days before the meeting. Submissions for Public Hearings received by this deadline will be shared with Council, included in meeting materials, and published on calgary.ca/ph.
  • Standing Policy Committees: Written or audio-visual submissions must be received by 12:00 p.m. (noon), two days before the meeting. Submissions for Standing Policy Committees received by this deadline will be distributed during the meeting and published on calgary.ca/ph.

Next Steps on Blanket Rezoning

Recently, a Notice of Motion came before the Executive Committee regarding Blanket Rezoning. My commitment to repealing blanket rezoning is unwavering, and I was one of the 13 Councillors who voted in favour of moving forward to repeal blanket rezoning.

I did not include my name as a sponsor of this Notice of Motion because Calgarians deserve a system that is better than what we had. The proposed Notice of Motion did not include a request to amend the engagement process within the City of Calgary.

By way of example, the proposed notice of motion (Repeal of Blanket Rezoning (Land Use Bylaw 1P2007 Amendments Implementing City-Wide Residential Rezoning)) did not include a request to amend the engagement process within the City of Calgary. I have been vocal during the campaign as well as a Councillor that we must improve the engagement process for Calgarians with respect to development. One of my major issues with blanket rezoning is the fact that the voice of Calgarians is ignored in development decisions within their communities. This is not acceptable and must change.

The notice of motion will be brought forward to an upcoming Council meeting for approval (mid-December) at which time I will make my recommended amendments which, in my opinion, will ensure we create a better development process for all Calgarians.

Regarding the Urgent Notice of Motion on the Ban of National Flags at Calgary City Hall

On the 18th of November, I voted no on an urgent Notice of Motion to discuss the ban on the raising of national flags at Calgary City Hall.

This is a deeply sensitive issue for many Calgarians, and I appreciate all who took the time to contact my office with concerns relating to this urgent Notice of Motion.

Over the past four weeks, my votes on Council have reflected my unwavering commitment to community consultation and engagement, and this remains the case. City Council has reached the consensus that this is an issue that requires more time to discuss all implications.

My vote does not reflect my final position on this issue. Rather, it reflects my unwavering commitment to community engagement. I expect this issue to be raised in the Executive Committee in December. In the meantime, I will be taking the time to learn and listen to the community to inform my decision.

My office remains committed to an open and honest dialogue on this issue and can be contacted at ward6@calgary.ca.

Committee Appointments

I have been appointed to the following Committees: Infrastructure and Planning Committee (Vice-Chair), Audit Committee, Executive Committee, Alberta Municipalities, Arts Common Advisory Committee, Calgary Convention Centre Authority, Pension Governance Committee, Calgary Economic Development Ltd., and Opportunity Calgary Investment Fund Ltd. Remembrance Day

I had the honour of continuing the tradition of the Ward 6 office hosting the Remembrance Day ceremony at Battalion Park in Signal Hill.

Recently, Sarcee Camp was recognized with a National Historic Designation, a fitting tribute to the contributions and courage of our nation’s bravest who trained and served here. Each time we visit this site, we are reminded of their sacrifice and service.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in reflection and remembrance, helping to bring our community together on this important day.

Safety During Wintertime and Snow Removal

Priority Snow Plan

The winter season is right around the corner, and with it comes drastic changes in our weather. Keep up to date with the City’s priority plan, snow and ice clearing progress and road conditions map, found here: Priority Snow Plan.

Become a Snow Angel

Clearing snow and ice from sidewalks can be challenging – even dangerous – for older adults and people with limited mobility. Snow Angels help keep those Calgarians safe. Consider becoming a Snow Angel today!

Calgary Transit Switching to All-Weather Tires for Better Grip

Calgary Transit has started to gradually replace worn out and damaged all-season tires on its 40- and 60-foot bus fleets with all-weather tires. These tires will be used year-round and are more suitable for Calgary’s winter conditions.

The Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake-rated all weather-tires have undergone rigorous testing for snow traction and are expected to help keep buses and their passengers moving during Calgary’s unpredictable winters. It is expected that these tires will be installed on Calgary Transit’s entire fleet of buses by 2029. This improvement comes at no additional cost to Calgarians.

Main Streets

The City of Calgary is searching for input on how our main streets are doing. The Main Streets Program is driven to revitalize the heart of established communities.

Currently, the City is conducting an annual Main Streets Metrics survey, which collects and tracks data related to how main streets can support a social and healthy environment, facilitate improved mobility and functionality, demonstrate unique character and identity, and create areas of economic vitality.

To make your voice heard, take the survey at this link.
