Earth Day in Calgary

In more than 190 countries, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 with over six million Canadians joining in the annual global event by taking part in activities that protect the environment. Earth Day is a day of civic participation and action, and the theme for 2024 is Plastics vs Planet.

In 2021, Council approved our Environment Strategy  and we are committed to delivering on Council’s Foundation for 2023-2026, including climate resilience and achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

We have several programs related to the 2024 theme of plastic waste, and without a focus on reduction, most single-use plastic items will simply be replaced with single-use items made from other materials. A focus of Calgary’s Environment Strategy is to reduce waste from single-use items regardless of material.
