The 114 Avenue and Barlow Trail SE Piling and Road Realignment project, awarded to Graham Construction in June, has also being making steady progress. The work includes installing 14 piers to support the future bridge deck and rail tracks, alongside road realignment efforts to create larger medians that will accommodate the pier structures.

Of the 24 piles to be drilled as part of this work, Graham has completed 11 to date. Notably, 16 of these are large-diameter piles, measuring 2.3 metres in width—making them some of the largest piles Graham has ever drilled. Road realignment work is approximately 75% complete, with the whole project set to wrap up early in the new year.

More recently, three additional contracts have been awarded with teams currently mobilizing to site.

North Star Contracting was awarded the contract to complete the Ogden Road Realignment project. In addition to the road realignment, work includes utility installations, reconstructing a portion of Millican Road, adding multi-use pathways on both sides of Millican Road and along the west side of Ogden Road, and building a new parking lot at the south end of Pop Davies Athletic Park that will include almost 100 new parking spots.

The contract to complete the 78 Avenue Light Rail Transit (LRT) Bridge was awarded to Graham Construction. This critical work expands on a recently completed project in the area that Graham finished this past summer and includes building a bridge beside the new underpass at 78 Avenue S.E. for the Green Line tracks that will run parallel along the west side of the Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) railway line.

The new 78 Avenue S.E. underpass and roundabout. The 78 Avenue LRT Bridge will be built on the west side of the CPKC rail line.

And finally, EllisDon was awarded the contract for the Blackfoot Trail LRT Bridge. A key piece of infrastructure for the Green Line, the bridge will carry trains over Blackfoot Trail S.E. just south of the 26 Avenue S.E. station.

With construction progressing and local companies at the helm, the Green Line LRT – SE Project is confidently moving from vision to reality and laying the groundwork for a more connected Calgary.

Calgary Built: The Green Line LRT
Episode 4: Geotechnical Drilling

What lies beneath the ground that we'll build upon? It's critical that we understand the strength of the ground and its ability to support heavy structures before we start building bridges and elevated LRT sections. That's where geotechnical drilling comes in.

Since the spring more than 170 boreholes have been drilled along the SE Segment, and over the past ten years, Green Line has drilled over 800 boreholes and test pits. By understanding the soil and bedrock conditions, we reduce risk and ensure each bridge is built on a solid foundation.

Launch of the Indigenous Construction Monitoring Program

Alyssa No Runner (centre) leads the Indigenous Construction Monitoring Program.

This summer we launched our Indigenous Construction Monitoring Program, established in collaboration with all Treaty 7 Nations and the Métis.

The program was created to enhance The City’s awareness and understanding of the diversity of Indigenous traditional land use, sacred sites, and historical knowledge. Monitoring programs are increasingly recognized as essential to responsible development across Canada.

The intent is to observe how the land is impacted by construction and watch for any artifacts that may be uncovered.

Indigenous Construction Monitoring for Phase 1 of Green Line will occur alongside archaeological monitoring at the South Bow River Crossing, Elbow River Crossing, and Maintenance and Storage Facility construction areas.
