Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy

FOIP is the acronym for Alberta’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (“FOIP Act”) RSA 2009, Ch. F-25.

The FOIP Act is the legislation that aims to strike a balance between the public's right to know and the individual's right to privacy. It:

  1. protects an individual's right to privacy by setting out rules for the collection, use, and/or disclosure of personal information by a public body; and
  2. provides a right of access to information in the custody or under the control of a public body, subject to limited and specific exceptions.
